I just finished my S2 RB25DET swap in my S13. I'm in the process of setting everything to stock values. Idle, Timing, etc. I need to set the idle and I don't as of yet have a Tach that displays the correct RPM. The FSM states not to use that as a basis for setting it anyways. I also do not have CONSULT. There is a engine speed detection terminal, which is supposed to be used to set all that stuff. I know where the connector is but what do I use to read it? Multimeter? Which is the signal supposed to be when the idle is set correctly -/+ 650 rpm? I know how to set everything up, it's pretty basic, I just need to know what to read the signal with.

You use a tach and a timing light. /thread.

Yeah brilliant idea if my tach read even remotely correctly. I have no idea how far it's off and would like to get this stuff done.

Pick up a timing Light with the RPM read out. Also make q spark plug wire to easily get the signal

OK, so you need to verify / set the idle and timing. Your tachometers accuracy is questionable. Read up and you will notice that the factory KA tach needs to be adjusted. You have a couple of options;
1. timing light with integrated tachometer.
2. Walk down to AutoZone / Advance / Pep Boys/ NAPA and pick up a basic SunPro or SW tach for $30, then rent a timing light if you do not posses one currently.
3. Send your existing KA tach to Carl H and have him modify it. Minimal fee, and you know it is accurately set.

Personally, I am not a fan of the integrated timing lights. I have seen them to be.. less reliable and accurate. Inductive timing lights work better, in my experience.
Also, consult is a great, free, tool. use it.

another viable option in terms of getting an accurate tach is using an i30 or maxima tach. heres the link to the write up post5296020.html#p5296020

i personally used the maxima tach which is AFAIK the exact same one used in the I30. it's a fairly easy mod, is accurate because it comes out of a v6 car, and these tachs can be easily found at the junk yard for dirt cheap and even free if you're smooth :naughty: . looks almost stock minus the clock. after doing the conversion should be no problem setting everything up.

I'm using a Autozone Timing light with the digital tach included and its pretty damn accurate.
I was looking at it compared to my Consult info on the laptop and it was 99.9% can't say 100% because my car doesnt' idle steadily.

But also I do have Spark Plug wires, due to the LS2 coil conversion. I <3 those coils!!!

Can't say anything for the timing light with the stock coils, I never had any luck with that.
