setting/checking tps voltage

I'm trying to check the voltage for the tps on my 98q but I don't think I'm doing right. Is this test done at the sensor itself or at the ecm? Or can it be done from either location? Also would it be a good idea to test the ohms of the sensor through its entire range? I didn't see anything in the FSM about testing the ohms so I don't know what pins on the connector I need to use for testing.

Any advice?

If you disconnect the TPS sensor and then turn the key on, engine off, measure the voltage on the pins. One should be ~5V. That is the reference voltage from the ECM. Ignore it. Re-connect the TPS sensor and back-probe the other 2 wires. This is your TPS voltage. To ohm the sensor, disconnect the TPS again and ohm the two pins you got the TPS voltage on while SLOWLY sweeping the throttle open. Watch for glitches and drop-outs.

Looks like the sensor is bad. While checking the ohms, I got readings all over the place. Got a new one on order. I hope it fixes my strange shifting and acceleration problems. Odd thing about it is that I wasn't triping a code? Is it possible for the sensor to be bad and not trip a code?

Sure. If the drop-out is small enough the computer may not catch it, even if several are present. The symptoms you are describing are consistent w/ a bad TPS...
