OK, I have a '91 240sx LE, with the KA24DE, I think. It has the dual cams. Anyways, In my inexpirence to troubleshoot the cars problems, I screwed up. What I need, is the lowdown on how set the cam timing/distributor timing. The cams were taken off, without being marked well, and the distributor removed. I think I solved the original problem, but developed this new one all on my own! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks All

Does anyone have a recommendation on what service manual or other type of repair literature that might be of help to me? I would like to get the old boy running again.

Thanks

that is tricky. I am not sure of how easy it is to time the ams to the crank on a 240, i haven't had to deal with mine yet,but on a z31 when i put on the timing belt it had little marks where the cam gears line up to,and the distributor has two little notcheson it at the bottome. line those up. what kinda problems are you haveing?

The problem with it is simple, I took it off and didn't mark it. Can anyone recommend a service manual, or give me some instructions on how to get running again?

Thanks all...

I have a chilton's car manual, cost me $16 from amazon or barnes and noble or suttin..pretty good for $16, there was no way I was going to spend $100 on a FSM

bothe the RBs and CAs line up like this; There is a dot on the crank gear that corresponds to a notch in the oil pump housing at about the 4:00 oclock position, line the crank up like that with the #1 piston at the top of the bore. The DOHC set up lines up with the dots on the cam gears aiming towards marks on the head at the 3:00 oclock position for the exhuast side, 9:00 oclock for the intake. As I said these are what I have seen on RBS and CAs, I have never worked on a KA but look for a similar setup, can somebody line him up on the distributor?

There should be 3 shiny links on your timing chain (maybe even 2 of one color and one of another). Loosen your rocker arm shaft bolts all the way so your valves close, then turn the crank over by hand until you see 2 links fairly close together that will line up with the dots on each cam gear.

Now the hard part is the timing. Pull your distributor out again and crank your engine over by hand until you set the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke (intake and exhaust valves will all be closed). Turn the distributor rotor to point at the #1 spark plug tower, then reinstall distributor. You will definately have to set the timing on it now, i believe its 20 degrees before TDC. If it doesnt crank, pull the distributor out again and turn the rotor 180 degrees and try it again.

Chilton's sucks @$$. There is no substitute for a FSM if you are doing this kind of work yourself. Chiltons is good for learning how to change your oil or spark plugs, but the Chiltons covers like 5 different cars, the FSM deals only with your exact year model car.

I couldn't find a Chiltons in the auto parts stores last time I was back and Haynes doesn't even make one for the 240SX. My FSM for the Silvia is great but it's all in Japanese.
