Are you talking about complete ignition timing, like setting up a map with a good timing curve? ...Or are you just talking about retarding the base timing to get an overall retard in order to avoid knock (and maybe add power)?

What kind of engine managment system do you have, and how much are you boosting? What octane do you normally run and what kind of fuel components do you have? All of these are important factors to consider when figuring out how to time your car. ...I know, I've been trying to learn how to do this on the AEM EMS over the past month-- and let me tell you, it gets pretty complicated.

Something tells me you're just talking about knocking the base timing back though, or at the most adding a MSD BTM Or something. If so, the answers to your questions really cant come untill you say how much you boost and all that...

grab a timing light and start screwing around with the distributor.

not a good way to explain it to someone, red

to properly set the timing:warm engine to operating tempunplug throttle position sensor (tps)make sure idle is at 700rpms, if it isnt adjust usign the idle adjustment screw on the back of the intake manifoldhook up a timing light and point it on the crank pulleytiming marks on crank pulley go as follows-5, tdc, +5, +10, +15, +20 for about 8psi set it to +16 degrees, just a bit past the +15 markplug tps back in and your set

just wanted to retarding the timing to avoid knock, but it does not knock now. but that timing chain makes some noise after hard driving i guess the oil is getting thin, am running royal purple oil 10/30w. any way back to the subject i got the walbro 255 300zxtt fuel filter and fmu basic setup 7psi.

why did you just tell him to advance timing 16 degrees? isn't that a bit dangerous?

He means adjust it to 16* btdc from the stock base timing of 20*. That's a total retard of 4*.

The timing chain might just be your upper guides going out. Just take off your valve cover and remove them. Nissan discontinued these parts anyway because they're useless.

you unplug the tps to set the timing into the ecu properly. also this way you know that at 700rpms the base timing is 20 degrees and can adjust from there.
