If the SES light was triggered by a loose gas cap, the light would still stay on after correctly tightening the gas cap until the system cycled out the error code or you erased it.
These Nissan cars are able to be put into a diagnostic mode, where a person is able to count the flashes of the SES light....which would then correspond to a code that you look up.
OR the easy way is to just hook up an OBD II reader and see what the code is and erase the code at that time. I don't know about where you are at, but the Autozone's out here would let you use one of their OBD II scanners to pull the codes and reset the SES light.
