Damn. I paid $500 for the extended warranty. Didn't think I'd need it, but after thinking about the car's age, I decided to get it just in case.

If they don't cover my claim, I'll be upset. I'll take it as a lesson learned though. I'll be more upset over the cost of repairs than the being out $500.

I have to at least have Keith give the car the inspection, at least for piece of mind. I just drove from work and the car ran great. Took it on the highway and it was superb. If the company doesn't cover it, I'm just going to get the IPT or Level10 transmission as a replacement and take the $2-3K hit.

Can I still purchase a Nissan one? I'm under 100K, but the car is over 10 years old.

I apologize. I didn't mean for it to sound like an attack. Brake standing on someone's face? That's just rude.

Guess I should have put a smiley there eh?
Ahhhhh, ok. Sounds good. The smilies definitely help since its hard to tell what someone means by text. Sorry to get on your case like that, it didn't seem like you were joking around but I understand now.

Your transmission problems seem to be sporatic. Did you ever unbolt the 1st gear start TCU you put in and reseat the connector?

I did. It didn't help. I'm now beginning to think that maybe the TCU itself was bad. Do things like that happen? Can TCU's go bad? I never had an issue with the 2nd gear start in. Not one that I'd noticed anyway. What are the symptoms/characteristics of a bad TCU?

Nissan extended warranties are only sold while a car is still in basic warranty [less than 4 years], that way they have use of money for a few years to build up reserve. 2 separate businesses under Nissan.

$500 is the typical sales commission for a better warranty [service contract] that usually cost $2000. After all when you can be on the hook for $4-$5k you need $2,000 up front.

I have never heard of a bad TCU but I guess it's possible. So you're saying that the 2nd gear start TCU works fine, but the 1st gear start doesn't? I would say it's more likely that your transmission has an issue in 1st gear and you just don't know about it because it's not being used with the 2nd gear start TCU, if that's the case. Might try holding the car in 1st manually with the shifter while using the 2nd gear TCU and see if you can recreate your problem that way.

Thanks Heath. That's what I thought. I thought it was a bad first gear, but I never knew it because first gear wasn't used. Tempted to just throw the second gear in and forget about it, but I'm afraid that if left unattended, the problem will spread.

How do i hold the car in first with the second gear in? I'm sorry, but I've never shifted past D. I used to watch my friend do it in his J30 when he raced. Then his transmission died. I'd hate for that to happen to me. How does the shifting go? Is there some sort of timing to get it right?
