Wow - I have done more reading on motor oil today than I ever dreamed possible. I found out that Nissan Ester isn't "all that." I'm also realizing that this new G37 engine is a lot harder on oil than my old G35. Finally, I noticed that my G37 was manufactured 3 months before I picked it up, so the factory fill has been sitting in it for awhile. So here's my vehicle and my plan:

Vehicle
2010 G37 Sedan

Typical use
8K miles per year, mainly city driving, Houston climate.

Plan

500 miles
Regular Pennzoil 5W-30
Purolator PureOne filter

1000 miles
Same

3000 miles
Same

5000 miles
Switch to Red Line 5W-30 synthetic with PureOne
Rotate tires

10K miles
Same

15K miles
Same
Change in-cabin air filter

I am running Mobiil 0W-40 and so far I am happy and its a true synthetic. Redline oil is a great oil from what I have read but I never tried it.

Good choice on oil filter though, stick with it because its one of the best.

Thinking that changing after 500 miles twice is overkill....but, that's just my .02
Also, I change my oil at 3K to 3.5K in my G35's, Max, and Furd

Paul, you're running 0w40 in your G37??

Sorry I don't own a G and I am not sure honestly what viscosity oil is required. I never did any research either but I do know from what I heard in the Q section and around reputable forums that Mobil 1 0W-40 is the only true synthetic oil Mobil offers.

Feel free to disregard the oil part of the post if it doesn't apply here, But I am correct about the oil filters.

Infiniti has two oil change schedules. If you drive mostly on the highway in moderate temperatures, you can get by with 7,500 miles or 6 months. However, you said you will be driving mostly in Houston. The schedule for that is 3,750 miles or 3 months. With a good synthetic, I guess you could safely stretch to 5,000 miles.

You should be aware that, to protect your warranty, you should not go more than six months between oil changes regardless of mileage or driving conditions. If you drive pretty much the same distance every month (unlike those of us who park our cars for several months during the winter), you will only accumulate 4,000 miles before reaching the six month limit. That''s pretty close to 3,750.

There is no need to change the oil so many times in the first few miles. According to Infiniti, the break in period is the first 1,200 miles. You could change it at that mileage, but I don't think it's necessary. After that, follow the 3,750 mile schedule, being careful not to go over six months at least until the warranty expires. If you want to switch to synthetic, I see no reason not to do so at the first oil change after the end of the break in period.

I agree with KIendahl, there is no need to change before you hit at least 1k. That's what I did with my 09 G37. I had a few quarts of ester oil given to me, so I used that and regular 5W30. She's only got around 2500 miles now, so when I hit 4-5k I'll be using 5W30 Royal Purple. For the filters, I recommend Nissan parts.

As for the extended mileage, 4-5k miles or 3-4 months is a good interval.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I changed the oil at 500 miles because I wanted to get the factory fill out of there. It had been sitting in the car several months from manufacture to sale.

I may go 500, 2500, 5000 to start out.

Everything I have read suggests that you need to let the rings seal over the first 5000 miles before switching to full synthetic. The service manager at Grubbs Infiniti actually suggested waiting until 10K before switching to synthetic, but I think that's awfully conservative.

I have also read where Nissan OEM oil filters are NOT the greatest thing since sliced bread. Sufficient but not excellent. PureOnes (part 14612) are relatively cheap ($6.05/per delivered) and get a lot of love.

The G37 engine is hard on oil. Group 5 synthetics like RedLine, Motul, etc. have outstanding UOAs in this engine compared to other oils. I can get RedLine delivered for just over $9 a quart. Interestingly, Nissan Ester ($12/qt) has very disappointing UOAs in the G37.

Oil filters are a tricky bunch...you don't want too much filtration as you can go into bypass sooner, but you want decent protection. I believe the Nissan filters are the best of both worlds. I also like the NAPA gold filters.
