Hello everyone. I was recently thinking about switching to synthetic oil (Mobil 1). I asked my service manager and he stated "I would strongly advise you against using synthetic oil." I have an '06 G35 coupe with 14k miles.

I've read many of the threads here for synthetic oil and have read all the benefits and it seems like a great switch to me. Can I hear some opinions about synthetic and why you think I should or should not switch? I trust my service manager but I'm not sure, I could be wrong. Thanks.

The only reason why I'd think he'd suggest that is because it's costly, and once you go synthetic, you can't go back to regular.

My buddy retired from the city. Ran the heavy truck shop.Master car and truck mechanic. Most conservative mechanic I know.Runs fully syn. in both of his Toyota's. I would consult some other Infiniti dealers. Mine told me to use it. Don't know what your service manager's motive is for telling what he did.

You can use synthetic when ever you like. They advise to wait till after your first service because the manufacturer puts in a lot of additives in the oil for proper break in. Synthetic oil has also shown to cause some problems with properly letting the piston rings seat. With your mileage you should have no problems. You can go back and forth when ever you like between synthetic and regular. I believe it is great to run synthetic but the trade off is it's costly. If you change your oil very frequent then synthetic may not be an option for you.

I concur.... the general rule of thumb is wait until the first 5000 miles before switching to synthetic. Also you should take it easy on a brand new motor for at least the first 500 miles. New motors are actually broken in when you buy the car but that doesn't mean you should buy the car and then proceed to drive it off the lot and beat the piss out of it.

You can actually go back and forth between synthetic and mineral oils. In areas with extreme temperature variances, people will use synthetics when its cold and mineral oils when it warms up again. Just that if you use a pure synthetic, you'll need to flush it out before you go back to mineral (Mobil1 isn't a pure synthetic).

Thanks for all the replies!!

Yea, I really don't know what his motive was for telling me that. I called another Infiniti service manager to see what he thought and he says that it's fine to use synthetic and that I don't have to change the oil so often with synthetic depending on which I choose.

Smockers, where did you get this information? I would just like to read up on it since I use Mobil 1. I know on the bottle it says 'Fully Synthetic', so I'm wondering if it's not 'pure synthetic', how can they put that on the bottle??Thanks!!

This is a great resource for any of the topics provided on the site. It has also been discussed in this forum I believe.

Just click on Engine Oil and scroll down to the synthetic vs. mineral part. What determines if its a synthetic or pure synthetic is what it is derived from.

I'm not sure when it happened, but some street racing buddies I have called me a few months back and suggested I not use Mobile 1 any longer for just that reason. I plan on switching to Royal Purple next oil change.

Mobil1 was never a pure synthetic, at least to my knowledge, its just that people realized a full synthetic wasn't a pure synthetic. Oil giants like Mobil, BP (Castrol), Shell, etc. won't make a pure synthetic because a regular synthetic is just another way to market their raw oil.

i was gonna say that or the only other thing i could think of is that your engine has ran conventional oil for many miles but that is not your case
