The other day my "Service Engine Soon" light came on (steady), I was shocked so I read the manual and it said it's the emission system, I kept reading and one of possible causes is a loose gas cap, so I immediately checked the gas cap and YES it was not on correctly, so I screwed it back on correctly. The manual says the "Service Engine Soon" light will go out with a couple of fills. BUT it is still on, it's driving me nuts, I even disconnected the battery for an hour and reconnect it, but it's still on. I guess I have to visit Nissan dealer, the car is still under warranty would they charge me $$$ to reset it? Or should I wait a little longer?

In my (limited) experience, SES lights triggered by momentary emission-system glitches have taken longer to reset themselves than advertised, although this has been in cars other than the Versa. I'm also not sure that disconnecting the battery is necessarily a method to clear such codes. How many days has it been since the code was thrown - and how many times have you filled up since then?

To my knowledge, clearing a SES code under warranty should be covered (free).

My take on this?

Bring the car to the dealer...it's covered under warranty and they can READ THE CODE. Maybe it's not the emission system...maybe it is and there is genuinely something WRONG with the emisssion system...but it's under warranty so my opinion is that by bringing it in to be checked is exactly what you should do...remember car manufacturers will void the warranty if they think you didn't do your "due diligence" in maintaining the car and bringing in the car when it throws a code in a reasonable amount of time probably falls into that category...

Just bring it in...I doubt they will charge you since it's covered under warranty...that's what warranties are for...I am not one to take risks with 15-20K purchases, LOL, that's just too much money to risk IMO

That's what I was thinking of, it's not worth the risk. BUT as of this morning, the lights are off! Seems like I should of been more patient.

Thank you for all your vital opinions!!

This happened to me one day after owning the car for like 2 weeks. My check engine light came on and it was on for like weeks then went off and has never came on since then. Didn't have time to take it too the dealership back then.

It's interesting that this has been brought up. Although I haven't actually had my service light trip from the cap not going on correctly, I notice when I fill up that the gas cap doesn't go back into it's threading very easily. Sometimes I have to try 3 or 4 times to get it set in properly before I turn it, and I could easily see how people couldn't get the cap on right before driving off. I wondered if this was just me or if this is a more widespread problem, but I think it's obvious now that it's just a poorly designed cap. Has anyone with an 08 had the same problem?

Truthfully, I haven't noticed this at all. I have no problem putting the gas cap back on my car...usually on the first try too...

Yeah actually I do find it sometimes difficult to screw it back on correctly, I try not to rush it, ant not press the cap on just turn easily.

I may have the same problem with my '08. My service engine light came on 2 days ago and has been on ever since. I have filled up 2x (only 30 of 40 litres) and light is still on. I will double check the gascap and make sure i hear 3 clicks when i tighten it.

Otherwise i have an appointment this thurs
