I went to get my oil changed at Midas on my 2003 Infiniti QX4 4WD.
A few days before that the Service Engine Soon light came on.

Now I used to have a brand new 2003 Infiniti G35.
If memory serves, a Service Engine Light would come on every 3000 miles.
When I got the Oil Changed at an Infiniti Dealer (always) the light would be off when I got my car back.

Today at Midas they said that's not an "Change Oil Light" but a Check Engine Light.
I said I don't think so.
They said it will be a 100 dollars to do a diagnostic.
Thankfully the owner stepped in and said just find out what the problem is.
Then they went on to speculate it's because the oil hasn't been changed in a while.
I have no idea.
At 129,000 miles this is the first time I changed the oil.
But I don't want to run into this situation again.
If I go to an Infiniti Dealer no problem, they will know what to do.
But on the other hand they might find 300 dollars worth of work somewhere else.
If I take it to a Midas or other Oil Change place I don't want them to think it's something that it's not.

Can anyone help me with this or confirm that it's just a Change Oil Light.
Furthermore, how do I reset this myself if I want to?
On my 2008 Jeep, I would turn the ignition half way and pump the gas pedal three times.
That would clear the Change Oil message believe it or not.

There is no "change oil light" or any form of maintenance minder on your QX4. I'm fairly are your G35 didn't either and the dealer was pulling your leg. Go to any auto parts store, they will usually pull engine codes for free. Post any and all codes here so we can diagnose them.

Wow. Interesting.
Speaking of that is there something I can get that will allow me to read the codes myself?
On my 2008 Jeep the actual code would display on the dash.
Thanks.

Google "OBD-II Reader" "OBDII Reader" "OBD II Reader" "OBD-2 Reader"

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on how to spell it.

If you have an Android smartphone, using an inexpensive Bluetooth ODB-II adapter and the Torque Lite app (free) will allow you to read and clear engine codes. Torque Pro ($5) will allow you to read and log live data such as coolant temperature, engine timing advance, boost levels, etc. I would recommend this ODBII adapter, it's only $24.

You'll be glad you did.
Having my own code reader has saved me a lot of money.
