Has the engine mis-fired or sputtered at all? That's usually the first sign of water in the gas.
Where I live, water in the gas in winter is semi common.
It usually comes from condensation forming in the tank, as opposed to actual water getting in.
This usually occurs when the tank is almost empty (either the tank in your car, or the tank in the ground at the service station), and the temp outside drops.
A couple of suggestions that should help: Keep your tank at least half full, if you can. Do not run the tank to empty. The fuller the tank, the less space for water to form.
Secondly, keep a bottle of gas line anti freeze in your vehicle. If it looks like you have water problems, put it in the tank.
Once the bad gas has been run out (burned), the SES light should eventually go out.
Hopefully, that's your only problem.
