Hello All,

It's cold here in Connecticut. My fuel tank was low, I put about $15 of midgrade (5 oor so gallons) I get a mile down the road and the Service Engine Soon light goes on. (yes the cap is on tight.) Now I found out my sister's friend bought her gas at the same station almost exclusively and had problems with "water in fuel." What should I do? Additives, burn it all down? I want the SES light off!

Thank you in advance!

I found a way to reset my 2002 manually. Very similar to 2002 Maxima, and I found it on the maxima forum.

With Car off, release gas pedal completely

Turn Key to ignition position for 3 seconds, do not start,

Press gas pedal to the floor and release 5 times in 5 seconds

wait 7 seconds, then press gas pedal to the floor for 10 seconds.

When SES light starts flashing release gas pedal

Press and hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor for more than 10 seconds

When the SES light flashing again, release the gas pedal

The SES should flash 10 times, pause, flash 10 times, pause, flash 10 times and pause and flash 10 times.

Turn the ignition off

Wait 3 seconds and start the car.

Good luck

if you plug in an OBD2 scanner, you will not only be able to reset the light, but the scanner will also tell you why the light was thrown.

Has the engine mis-fired or sputtered at all? That's usually the first sign of water in the gas.
Where I live, water in the gas in winter is semi common.
It usually comes from condensation forming in the tank, as opposed to actual water getting in.
This usually occurs when the tank is almost empty (either the tank in your car, or the tank in the ground at the service station), and the temp outside drops.
A couple of suggestions that should help: Keep your tank at least half full, if you can. Do not run the tank to empty. The fuller the tank, the less space for water to form.
Secondly, keep a bottle of gas line anti freeze in your vehicle. If it looks like you have water problems, put it in the tank.
Once the bad gas has been run out (burned), the SES light should eventually go out.
Hopefully, that's your only problem.

Thanks Buzz...I forgot to add that absolutely NOTHING was wrong with vehicle performance, no hestitation, no knocking...I was just suspect of the fuel because the light went on almost immediately after I put the gas in, then my sister told me of her friend's problem with the gas at that station. That said, I'll burn the gas, fill er up and see.

P0174 says the US driver's side is running lean. The FSM has eight pages of ideas. It could be a bad front O2 sensor, or an injector,
or low fuel pressure, or ...
