Hi guys!I just bought a 2000 Xterra 4x4 with the 3.3L. This is not my first Nissan, so I'm familiar with "Service Engine Soon light". But I'll ask anyway - bad Oxygen Sensors ? Truck has 90,000 km.Thanks for your input and I love the site.

Have you thought about running by Autozone or similar to have them hookup a scanner and read the code? They do it for free!

Too bad we don't have Autozone in Canada, but I'll look for other places.

Welcome to NICO my fellow Canuck!

The Xterra's service engine light comes on for various reasons. Knock Sensor, Mass Air Flow Sensors, O2 Sensors, Transmission issues and yes a loose gas cap (That is related to fuel vapour canister circuit). Either way you need to have the codes scanned and the OBD scanner should be available from Parts Source. I know you have those in TO. Rentals are free but you need to provide a deposit, usually a credit card is needed.

But the dealer in your area has Nissan Specific scanner that can give a better interpretation of what your computer knows. I had mine scanned a couple of weeks ago for a poor fuel economy issue. My Mass Air Flow Sensor was a bit below operating specifications and an OBD scanner would not have detected that, where the Nissan Scanner does. It cost me under $70.00 for the complete system scan at my Local Dealer.

I went to the dealer and as predicted- Bad Oxygen Sensor , actually both. So dealer wants $650 ( plus $100 I spent for diagnostics). My question is- should I change it or leave it alone? I'm ok whith the extra light on my dashboard but I know it might mess up fuel mileage.
