Service Engine Soon light is on??

Greetings,

I've been visiting the site for sometime, and tonight I was able to sign in. I purchased a Versa S, 6sp, Magnetic Gray, power package (no ABS) in September, and until today I have had no problems. My driving is 80/20 country/city driving, I have 1930 miles on the car (when I got the car from the dealer it had 199 miles on) and kept a record of gas mileage; started with 31 mpg in the first tank and 36 mpg is the fifth and the last tank. I try to apply brakes timely, keep the engine around 2200RPM and shift around 2800 RPM.

After reading the posts, I was prepared for TPMS light, but today while driving "Service Engine Soon" light came on and stayed steady. I stopped, checked the manual, checked the gas cap, and continued driving. The manual talks about two possibilities: Steady and Blink. My understanding is "steady" is less serious than "blink", but in both cases, the manual suggests to drive for "a few trips", and if the light does not come off, I should take the car to the service, but no need to tow. I believe "no need to tow" means "the car will not blow up, so don't worry".

At the end of the day, after 80 miles, the light was still on. I wonder if this is a news for the list members or if anyone else has experienced the "SES". And whether if you have any suggestions, such as what would be the optimal for a few trips.

Thanks in advance.

best,versaSR

TAKE IT TO THE DEALER!!!

That is what the warranty is for. If it was not the gas cap, something serious can be wrong with your Versa. The dealer will fix it for free. Then report to us what was wrong.

ETA- It most likely won't cause harm to the engine, just the emmisions system.

If you are afraid of the dealer, take it to Autozone and have the code read for free, then take that to the dealer and have him fix it.

Hi,

I will take the car to the dealer, however before doing so, I wanted to be sure of several points resorting to the common experience pool of the Versa forum: 1. I searched the problem online, and it looks like Infiniti forum has several messages on the subject, and in their case, my understanding is that it has nothing to do with emissions. 2. My experience of the dealer so far has been as such: I am the over-concerned customer, the service at the dealer is "cool" - I took the car for excess fan noise, the service person told me flatly that he does not hear any sounds, I still think it is a lot- my first car was a 1992 Sentra and I was not used to hearing fan noise with all 151k miles. And I called once for clutch, and been told that it is as such since it is prefixed in the factory. So I "forced" myself to get used to clutch, but if your body-size is different than what Nissan thought "ideal customer size", the car has some disadvantages, minor case in point: cup-holders, another minor case in point: I have pillows on my seat.

So, rather than asking the SES light and in turn be told "oh nothing, just drive it around" I would like to know if the light has more implications.

I will let the forum know about the result.ThanksversaSR

I'm going to have to say that it's either a malfunction or the gas cap. My best guess would be that it is the gas cap, which takes a few (I remember hearing about seven, specifically) trips to reset it. I have had this problem with my old sentra before, after a few trips it was reset.

Don't let the dealer make you feel like that. There is a check engine light. You are under warranty. They SHALL fix it. You are just following the directions in the user's manual. If they make you feel small, find another dealer. And call 1-800-NISSAN1 to complain about how they belittled you following the owner's manual. File a complaint with your local BBB.

Don't be affraid of your dealer. Nissan Corporate will set them straight & make it right if that dealer treats you like ****. It affects that dealer's pecking order for new cars.

Remember the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I had a similar problem. I just filled up with gas at Chevron and about 40 miles later, the SES light came on and was blinking. I re-tightened the gas cap and it was still on. I went to another gas station and topped the tank off with premium and the SES light went away about 5 miles down the road. Just a little trick I learned from driving Chevy's for the past 12 years.

Hopefully this isn't the start of a curse like the TPMS light.

LOL, I would like to use this quote as my bumper sticker.

I will fill the tank and count upto seven as I turn the gas cap, and if the light is still on, I will wait until my appointment for next Wednesday.

Thanks a lot for the tips. I hope TPMS and SES will be the only mishaps with the Versa. I very much like driving around with this car, I have yet to name it though.

Warm wishes,versaSR

Wow, you're very tolerant, I would have raised hell with Nissan Corporate if the dealer didn't fix it. Your car is new, they are obliged to repair it per the warranty!

I agree with Thristy. You paid how much for your car??? You should get some kinda service with that. You shouldn't have to go to ebay to buy something to "fix" your problem.

If I recall, several Versas have had problems with broken or incorrectly installed fuel filler necks. This could certainly cause your condition. also, it IS possible for a fuel cap to fail. They actually test the caps during emissions testing in my state. If your cap is not giving a good seal, it would give this error (and as such would fail emissions).
