Hey everyone,

Troubling to see this light. Some background:

2006 6mt sedan, around 36,000 km

Saturday~ 12-noon - replaced winter steelies with OEM 18" and summer tires (done at tire shop)~ 4:30pm - topped up with premium fuelGear changes done around 4000 rpm - 4400 rpm consistently while driving

Sunday~ 9pm - service engine soon light came on while driving on highway around 130km/hChecked fuel filler cap and re-tightened

Wednesday - light is still on and I don't know what's going on. I'm not really very mechanically inclined so any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Nothing done under the hood as far as I know.

I called the dealer and they said to wait a few more days just in case it is the fuel cap.

get the codes read at a auto parts store. once you can tell us which code was thrown its easier to figure things out.

You can also buy your own code reader. For about $150, I bought one from Mac Tools that was recommended by my favorite independent foreign car shop. Someone on the forum may be able to suggest something cheaper that is still adequate.

A steady check engine light doesn't require immediate attention. Suppose your code reader reports a problem that is expensive to fix but won't ruin the engine if left as is. You can just delete the code and keep on driving.

well, 6 days later the light went out....I never got hooked up to a reader, so I'm hoping the 'gas cap trick' was the fix...

there is really no trick to it. tightening the gas cap will only fix that specific problem because it needs to be air tight. it will not fix any other issues...just turn your cap at least 3 clicks each time
