I'm looking at a 99.5 QX4 with 82000 miles. The service engine light just came on but everything appears to be running fine. Anyone have any ideas what may have caused this and what if anything I can check? I don't want to buy this if it will cost me big bucks to fix it.

Every 82,000 mile vehicle for sale needs some work or it wouldn't be for sale.Be sure to study brake replacement costs......takes 4 hours per front wheel.

Time for O2 sensor replacement or evap control system, spark plugs, general induction cleaning.

At that miles, the most likely culprit is the O2 sensor. It is about $200 to replace the 02 sensors. You can take the car to an Autozone for a free scan. They can tell you exactly why the service engine light is on.

Thanks, it does appear to be an O2 sensor problem. I appreciate the info.

I have a '97 Q with 86k miles. The service engine light came on just this morning. I think it is the O2 sensors and am contemplating replacement of both. Is this a do-it-yourself kind of a job? While I'm at it, is there anything else I should replace? I do have some skills with handtools.

Thanks, Yuan

Yuan,Definitely you want to have your car scan either through the dealer or autozone. Makesure the 02 sensors are causing your serivice engine light before you change them. The 02 sensor is ~$70 a piece. The two rear o2 sensors are ~2 hours DIY kind of job. The two front o2 are very hard to access. I think you better off getting someone else doing the two front o2. If you going to DIY, I recommend borrow an o2 socket tool set from autozone. You will definitely needed.

I agree with everyone about getting the scan done. I know someone with a 2000 Honda Civic whose light came on. It was presumed to be the O2 sensor but turned out to be the distributor cap needed to be replaced.

Thanks, dropping the Q off at the Infiniti dealer on my way out of town on Monday.
