I recently replaced my air filter and forgot to plug in the electrical connector near the MAF and started the car. I had the same problem. Called the dealer & was told the service engine soon light would go out after a few hundred miles. It went out after less than 100 miles. So I would check that connector to be sure it is firmly seated and then wait for a couple of hundred miles. It may also have come on because of the chemicals used in cleaning the MAF?It is never a good idea to try and fix something that isn't broke.

The white smoke? What did you clean the MAF with? Did you spray liquid into the intake doing it?

Are you sure that the white smoke isn't the normal white smoke (steam I think) that comes out of the exhaust after a cold start?
