My cars registration is coming up due soon. The problem is service engine light is on and it needs to be smogged this year. When I put the code reader on the code that came up was P0705..Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Which makes since as I have an automatic and for months now it hasnt been shifting into 4th gear and it doesnt seem to effect the car at all when I press the overdrive on/off button. Any ideas on how I can fix any of these problems? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks (Yes, the overdrive is not working) The manufactured date is 2/99

Do you mean that over-drive isn`t working?

(Our automatics are 4 speed's)

Welcome to NICO.

There is a rather involved diagnostic procedure on page AT-91 of the factory service manual. Do your best to follow it to determine whether the PNP switch needs replacement.

Could you provide the manufacturing date of your QX4? It's on the driver door jamb sticker.

Transmission 3rd, 4th and 5th if equipped need to revolve in co-ordination from input to the throttle. The TBS (TPS)along with valve body and solenoids must be co-ordinated, otherwise the speed revolutions of the transmission to the speed control and input makes no sense. Usual suspect is the TBS, throttle body sensor, or TPS throttle position sensor could be loose or dirt covered.

The connector is very robust but with dirt can be off or intermittent and can create the MIL on condition.

Also, dirty fluid ATF, can cause the solenoids to lock up or operate out of sequence causing weird transmission operation, often a quick drain of just the pan can help, but the drained contents should be examined for debris or grit and look for air entrapped in the fluid.

What's the level and condition of the transmission fluid?

1. Drive around for 10 minutes in the city after the transmission is at operating temperature.
2. Park on a level surface and apply the parking brake.
3. With P selected, shift through every gear and return to P.
4. Pull the transmission dipstick with the engine idling, wipe it clean, reinsert it completely, and read the level. It must be within the notched area labeled "HOT". Check for fluid contamination after wiping on a paper towel.

The fluid should be red, and not smell burnt.

This should be the replacement park position switch.
