I recently changed the gasket on the driver side valve cover. I had to remove the intake to get to the gasket. After completing the work I put everything back to how it was. I know get a service engine light. The light came on after driving for about an hour. The car has been running fine. Any suggestions on how to trace this issue other than purchasing a obdII? I already double checked to see if I have a leaking vaccum but I cant fine any issues.

The easiest, simplest and needed...is to know what code that MIL light is indicating.
Without knowing the alarm code you will be guessing and second guessing until you're blue in the face.

You may be able to get an auto retailer to read the code for you. But if you are going to keep, drive and own that 97 QX4 it would help you a great deal and save time and money as long as you learn what the individual codes mean and/or refer to.

Download the manual.

Get the code(s) read, then post it and maybe we can help. But if you want to play around:
Could be:
Gas pressure, rail pressure, timing, O2 sensors and who knows what else.

The 97 is a fairy simple car but you need the codes.

I borrowed an obdII device. I was able to get the following codes; P-0400, P0325. I looked them up and they point to the knock sensor and EGR valve. Could they have gone bad after swapping the valve gasket cover? Also not sure if one sensor could be triggering the next sensor to malfunction. Is there a wat to test these two sensors or should I just replace?

Remember those codes. Clear the MIL LIGHT. Resume driving if the MIL light relights read the code(s), then diagnose.

You removed valve cover, nothing to do with EGR but knocking around on the engine you may have dropped a vacuum line, so check the engine top and sides for a loose cracked vacuum line. The EGR may have been partially clogged and you cleared it some by knocking around.

The knock sensor on a 1997 needs a real knock to set it off, you are burning 87 gas, do not use higher octanes. I think that removing the intake you set up vibrations that triggered that knock sensor at rear left of center.

With you working on the top of the engine let's see if these codes return...if so then diagnose. How many miles on this car?

So for now with the MIL light reset drive around and relax and if the MIL light squawks again see what the code(s) are.
