The easiest, simplest and needed...is to know what code that MIL light is indicating.
Without knowing the alarm code you will be guessing and second guessing until you're blue in the face.
You may be able to get an auto retailer to read the code for you. But if you are going to keep, drive and own that 97 QX4 it would help you a great deal and save time and money as long as you learn what the individual codes mean and/or refer to.

Could be:
Gas pressure, rail pressure, timing, O2 sensors and who knows what else.
The 97 is a fairy simple car but you need the codes.
