To those that have not served, you should know, and I suspect this great man would agree, there are examples of this sort of dedication throughout not just the Corps, but all branches of the military. I would wager examples of selfless service and dedication can be found in all service professions like firefighters, police, teachers and even people who volunteer to help their community.
The news would have you think that character and pride is no longer amongst us and the vocal and attention-grabbing daily examples would appear to support this, but there are people who still take pride in what they do, appreciation of what others' do and display such levels of honor and respect that it causes you to reexamine your own deeds.
As we enter an election cycle you can expect the scumbag politicians to do their on cue pilgrimage to the side of our men and women in uniform. It's predictable and detestable and I urge you not to listen to any of them when they play that game. Our military is not a campaign tool, it is a solemn duty to our citizenry pursued by people with a certain something that just can't be quantified and they deserve better than to be handled by some self-serving stuffed shirt with a little flag pin on their Brooks Brothers suit.
Speaking for myself and I feel safe in asserting my brothers and sisters still in uniform and out who take on whatever mission they can to support their community, they don't do it to serve these bloviating disingenuous politicians, they do it for all of us. To know that we appreciate the daily and repeated sacrifices they endure to serve us is all they could ask for.
Still serving my Corps as a civilian, I can tell you these proud people are not invincible. They still suffer like the rest of us, but they would never let it show. If you have the time and the opportunity to get involved in any of the supporting organizations that help these brave people financially, medically, or emotionally I urge you to do so. You will never understand the incredible feeling of certainty that you are doing something that makes a difference when you have a soldier or their family thank you for what you have done to help them. You will experience what they feel every day serving us.
