I am about to put together a home server. Something really just to play with, a little FTP, and hosting of some pictures/smileys/icons and things I post around the net often. Eventually turning to hosting a web site or two. Really, like I said, just something to play with.

My question is: Who else has one? Whether you built it or bought it, post up pics and specs. I wanna see what's out there and what you do with it.

Well, until I had a head crash on the HDD, I was running a Biostar TF720 with an AMD 3800+ Dual-Core processor running at 2.4. Was running 16GB of DDR2, with a 500 GB WD HDD. After the drive crashed, traded the dead drive and 10 GB of Memory for 2 1TB drives, so now I'm running 6 GB of DDR2 with 1 TB of space on a RAID 1. I was previously running Open Suse 11.0, for 4 domains, a WoW server, 2 MUD servers, and a mail server. Right now, it's running XP Pro 64 bit, 1 domain, 1 MUD server, and a mail server.

Wow that thing sounds like a monster. Even after the RAM drop. I don't need anything that major. I just mainly want to play with a domain/email server and maybe set up my own router or something. Any advice on the domain or mail software or the server OS? I have heard Linux servers are very configurable but the steep learning curve can make them hectic to set up and Windows Server is probably the easiest plug-n-play type.

If you really just want something to mess around with, just run XP Pro with XAMPP, it'll give you apache with PHP and SQL support, plus a mail server.

Would that have the support to allow me to setup the server to also run as a router, wired and wireless? That's also something I have been studying about.

You would be able to do it, but you'd need to find the software to do so.
