Ok my girlfriend's 05 Quest's A/C Alternator Belt keeps popping off due to a bad bearing in the A/C Clutch. I work on cars but Nissan and other foreign makes are new to me, so I know driving without the belt can cause damage to the engine and kill the battery. However we have been driving it without the belt and it goes maybe 30 miles before it dies and needs a jump.

Can anybody tell me why it goes so far before it dies ?

What kind of damage can this cause ? (Driving without the belt ?)

Is there a belt that can bypass or skip the A/C pulley ?
I know I need to replace the A/C clutch, but we're low on funds so I'm trying to find the cheapest quick fix. Need some advice ASAP please !

Thanks in advance guys !

Google for the AC bypass belt, they do exist.

I may be wrong, but it looks like the serpentine belt drives the water pump. I'd suggest not operating this vehicle for more than a few miles till you can fix it. Didn't it get hot when you ran it 30 miles w/o the belt?

The timing chain drives WP, it has a gear on the end of it. Vehicle has two serp belts, one for a/c-alt, the other power steering.

The car drives that far because the battery takes it that far before running down and then it has to be recharged. You won't get nearly so far at night, the lights use additional power. If the missing belt drove the water pump then 5 minutes and the engine would be scrap for the scrapyards.

A Youtube vid shows using a much shorter belt as possible but I found none listed in parts, probably because none of them came with no a/c. Look at the vid around 2:59, it shows nothing really in the way of a no a/c belt but the OP will have to carefully pick one that can work there, it will be MUCH shorter.
