Hi, I'm new on here. I've owned my 98 QX4 since 2002, when I purchased it from a dealer with about 46,000. miles on it. Now about 156, 700. miles on it. Fairly reliable, except for transmission problems the last 20-30,000. miles, resulting in several rebuilds and the installation of a transmission cooler.

I have researched and seen posts on here regarding changing serpentine belts on later model Pathfinders, but they seem to have a different configuration, and tensioner adjustment bolt, etc. I am attempting to install a serpentine belt on my 98 QX4. Specifically, the one that drives the alternator, etc. I cannot seem to find the magic combination of bolts to adjust the tensioner pulley. There is the upper one that extends all the way down behind it, and would seem to be the right one to tighten/loosen to adjust, and other bolt near the base below it. I'm thinking that I need to loosen the pulley nut itself. Any ideas? Preferably with a diagram if anyone has that.

I found the answer and got it done thanks to the online mechanic moderator Heath, giving me a tip and pointing me in the right direction re: the factory service manual! Basically, I had to loosen the nut on the tensioner pulley itself, before I could adjust it and tighten up the slack on the belt. The rest was a snap! I had suspected that might be what I needed to do, but had trouble loosening it. Finally resorted to giving the box wrench some taps with the wood handle of a small sledge hammer. That broke it loose! What a relief getting it done in time for the work week!
