So after my victory party that the lifter tick is fixed, I go to change the oil today to remove the Mystery oil. After the oil change and bleeding the brakes I crank it up. Tons of smoke coming out of the exhaust steadily. I take it for a spin to see if it clears. Nope, and there is oil dripping out of an exhaust leak where the test pipe meets the catback. Fresh rebuilt turbos, but seems they blew before hitting 250 miles.

So either a good set of used, upgraded turbos, or I'm getting stock chras. My luck is pretty crappy.

Yeah. I'm thinking it was more of the oil circulation issue that caused them to go bad. Oh well, roll with the punches. I knew I was taking a risk rebuilding them, but wanted to see if I could do it.

And let that be a lesson to you, don't ever attempt anything! jk, that sucks man, but at least you took on the challange even if it didnt work out, now you know how to theoretically rebuild a turbo.

^^^Yeah, replacing the CHRA should be a walk in the park for you. Ive personally, NEVER heard of any rebuilt turbos lasting more than 20k miles, before leaking.

Yeah, the reviews were hit and miss. And I think I would have been ok for a while if it weren't for the other oil issues. But at least there is one fear I'm over ;) going to just get new chras for them. Hopefully the last of the major issues.

On a side/good note. The only leaks I have are on the turbos, so guess I'll be leak free when I'm done :) cup half full!

Why do you think it was an oil circulation issue? cause of that stuck oil squirter?

Not to threadjack, but why do rebuilt turbos seem to blow so much faster than ones with new CHRAs?

Not a squirter, the oil jet with the checkball in it. Wondering if that may have made it run lean on that turbo.

The reason is you can't recreate perfection. At the RPM these turbos do, any small mistake gets amplified. And even though I marked the shaft, nut and wheel, I could have been micrometers off. But I'm thinking my issue was more of starvation, then high oil pressure after the oil change. I would have done more mileage if not for that... I think :)

Yeah that makes sense.

Where did you buy the rebuild kits from anyway?

eBay. They're all pretty much the same. Around $50-60 per kit

New CHRAs are balanced at high rpms, 10000 plus. 99.9 % of the time a rebuilt won't be, before installing back into the housing. Finding a shop to rebalance a rebuilt would be very costly, if you can find one.

id make sure you go through all the oil lines and make sure there are no blockages. you could have some buildup in there thats starving the oil from the bearings
