Yeah, that sounds about right... all cars are like this. My gas light came on yesterday and said I had 40 miles left, and took 16.5 gallons to fill. Take the hint when the car says it's empty, dont rely on this extra five gallons. Its bad for the fuel pump to run with little gas. The gas acts as a coolant for the fuel pump, which is why you can kill the pump trying to start with an empty tank. Plus you are more likely to suck up any sludge or dirt that is in the bottom of the tank. And if you take a turn or accelerate or brake hard you run the risk of the pump sucking air.
140 miles on 5 gallons means you are getting 28 mpg, which I higly doubt.
