Ok this is getting kind of old and I got no one else to ask. It goes to the shop on thursday to be fixed but if I can do it myself before hand that would be great.

My car has been just shutting off. They only way I can explain this is like this....If you've ever topped out a car with a rev limit you know that when you hit that point it will shut off the car until it gets back down to a certain rpm. well mine does it at 2500. When I'm driving if I hit 2500 my car will literally shut off my fuel until it drops back down to about 1500. after that it will rev byitself back and forth from 1500 to 2500 for about 30 seconds or it will jus turn off when it hits 2500.

It doesnt do it all the time....I would say it takes about 15 min of driving before it does it. And it is completely at random. I could be at a stoplight starting to go or cruising on the freeway.

Sorry if this is frustrating to read but I dont know how else to explain this. Let me know if you have an idea.

Thanks guys

Your car is randomly going into "limp mode." Check your MAFS connection.

that is not turning off. its a rev limiter.turning off would be not running.

you are in limp mode, as was mentioned check the MAF sensor and all its connections. wires, plug, everything.

Sounds like your MAF is making intermittent contact. Check the MAF plug. I believe that problems ocurring at 2500rpm are a hallmark of a MAF malfunction so I'd start there.

Also, check your spark plugs.

Like everyone says check the MAFS. More than likely you probably sucked up a bug into it. take it off go buy electrical contact cleaner and spray it out. Check your wires make sure they aren't shorted anywhere. -Alex

Mine did that same thing once, also randomly. As others have said, it was a MAF wiring problem. My cable was long enough to mount the MAF about a foot in front of the bumper (why I did that I do not know). So I shortened the cable to just reach the MAF. Problem solved.

Btw, that was with a completely shielded cable. The MAF signal circuit must be fairly high impedance and seems to be very sensitive to noise, bad connections, etc.

Yeah agree with most the posts. It could definatly be the MAF, or water could have got in the sensor for the MAF. Check teh wires for the MAF follow all the way back to the ecu just to make sure.

I have a rb20 maf.

so I turned it into the shop and the outcome was...the maf is perfectly fine....I found out that somehow tape had gotten into the fuel tank and it was sucked up into the fuel pump. so that got fixed.....well on my way home it started doing it again. I turned onto my street and my car shut off and now it wont start.

any ideas?

I have heard of doing that as a bad joke... put a rubber band in someone's tank.

Maybe there is more tape in there. Did they drain the tank?

Im not sure if they drained the tank or not....I guess I should give them a call and find out..

Edit: No they did not drain the tank...but they did get all the tape out

bad wiring, or a short in the wire. Something is grounded which shouldn't be, a "hot wire"
