Here is the long and short of it... I had a serious knocking noise, took my car to a ****ty shop and eventually had a "used" engine put in the 89 240sx I call my daily driver. The car stopped knocking for a while but basically returned back to knocking... The lifters have been changed so many times I have lost count. Sometimes it is quiet but most of the time it knocks, especially after it has bee driven for a long distance (try not to do that anymore). Is there anything else aside from the lifters that could cause that knocking noise? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

if its loud and sounds like marbles in a tin can then youve prob got a rod knock. check your oil to be sure you have some in there and that its not low. if its still knocking then take off a plug wire one by one while its running(and knocking) and when it stops thats the one thats knocking. if that makes it stop time for a rebuild or new engine. if you drive on it much anymore you could punch a hole in your block.

The 89 - 90 SOHC motors had oil pumps that had early failures. The best advice when buying a used SOHC motor is to just replace the oil pump before you use it.
