I asked this qeustion in another thread but it got lost. Tech, you have advised us to change the filter fron underneath, however, on the "A" there is just too much hardware in the way and I have found it much easier to change it from above. Maybe I'm not understanding something. I'm even thinking that it might easier to remove the fan to gain access to the filtrer. To me the best option seems to be to relocate the filter, but , seriously I would like your thoughts about how you would go about relocating the filter .ThanksGregPS. Please keep it as simple for me as you possible can.

We work on hundreds of Q and probably see an above normal percentage of actives.................we charge the same $29.95 for an oil change for any car V8 Lexus or Infiniti.

It is much harder to change from the top, any way changing a filter takes less than a minute once the belly pan is off.

Not having a home lift or drive on ramps with a pit is the shade tree mechanic problem.

I have nothing against relocating oil filters per se, as long as you put the car on the lift, remove belly pan, and examine everything with a flash light for 10-15 minutes every 90 days.

I feel that people are trying to avoid the 90 day inspections not making the oil change easier. A big or 2 stage oil filter is good and a reason to relocate............................still it does save you from the 90 day inspection.

We know that a 90 day oil change works well with even conventional oils and filters PLUS the 1990 oil was not nearly as good as the 1995 or 2000 oils which are inferior to the 2006 oils.

These cars are old and used obsolete technology, methods , and materials to achieve a lot thus they must have extra care compared to 2000-2006 models.

It is rare that my 90 day inspection does not show something that needs attending too..........gets put on watch list early to plan and budget before the failure.

The other reason for the 90 day lift inspection is to silicone and Wurth spray all the rubber components, bushing door , trunk hood, and window seals and runners, SUNROOF.

Just make sure you are being honest that the relocation does stop the 90 day under car inspection!

I'll be honest that my 90 day inspection doesn't happen anyway. I could stare at the engine from the underside all day long and not recognize the potential for future problems. Unless it is a part that I have already replaced and am familiar with what it looked like new and how it was installed, it is really unlikely that I would notice a problem.

So, for me, the oil filter relocation is purely about making changing oil filter an easier proposition.

And, to save the experts the hassle of telling me I'm doing a poor job of maintaining my Q... I can and have read massive amounts of info regarding the Q on these forums and on Q45.org. But, reading won't make me a mechanic and its a poor substitute for having experience under the hood. Right now, I don't have the experience to put any of the reading in a context that makes it useful while doing a 90 day inspection.

LEAKS are only differentable when you use spray brake cleaner to clean the engine and power steering, ac, coolant system to look brand new.

Most who change oil filter from the top don't use a can of spray to clean the oil dribbles,etc,etc,etc..........................at T3 we do..... all part of the $29.95 wasting [in the views of many] a perfectly good $2.50 in multicase lots.

.Now I'm wondering what tools you use. I have an assortment of flexy joints and extension bars with a belt type filter remover and a ratchet......needs three men and a monkey to hold everything together while I loosed the filter. Can you let me know what you use? There are no worries about getting under the Q for a 90 day inspection as I am usualy under there every second day polishing anything I can get my hands on and trying to find out how I can stop the ACTIVE from making thoes grinding noises that eminate from the valve bodys. Thanks for the advice Greg

Hand tight per FSM: 2/3 turn after first resistance felt............~~18-22lb/ft if you use a torque wrench.............even an 80 lb weakling [with MS] can exert that much.
