i was wondering if a short throw shifter designed for a sentra will work, or one from a maxima would either. they are $120 from jc whitney. are there any other good short throw shifters for cheap that are made specifically for the 240sx? or will one of these fit?

No, they won't. Those are both front wheel drive, which means they are controld by a cable, or linkage. Plus, the lenght of the shaft above the pivot point is a whole lot longer, wich would probabally make the shifting even worse. Sorry, just bust for a cheap OBX shifter. They're all pretty much the same.
