for pics, please go to

Time to step it up to new G35 coupe so here goes...

See below for pics of my car, and I have many more thru email.

This is a 1991 Q45 with 125k. The car is immaculate inside and out, having been in San Diego its entire life, and only one owner before me. The original owner was 80 years old, had every service and repair done at Infiniti of Carlsbad (of which I have every receipt since 1991), and the car has never been hit, no rust, not even a scratch or mark.

I have had the car for one year and drove it from So Cal to NY in early April. I have made some upgrades to the car including 18 inch Enkei rims and 245/40/18 rubber all around. I have installed the white gauge faces, modified the interior shifter bezel to accept a newer 94-96 factory rosewood trim piece, and I have replaced the Q stereo with a nwere 1997 BOSE head unit with the CD/tape combo. I also have replaced all four speaker units and they are still under warranty. New brakes 3,000 miles ago.

The TIMING CHAIN GUIDES have not yet been as best as I can tell, but other than that cost, this car needs absolutely nothing. The interior is flawless (there are more pics listed in one of my posts) and the car is so classy looking that most people assume it is a 98 or newer (not those here of course)

I am willing to take 4500 for the car, which I think is fair considering the custom upgrades and need for the guide repair. The car is carfax certified, and I know there i snot a cleaner Q out there for this money.

Hope someone is interested so my baby can go to good home, and FYI, the car is still in NY.

Am I crazy in thinking 4500 is fair?

Well unless you expect your buyer to drive your car from San Diego to Atlanta to get the guides done, that is a 2,000-dollar job. Plus at 127k there are a lot of things that DO need to be done like suspension pieces, O2 sensors, spark plugs, etc etc. At 127k it is not like the transmission will last past 180k unless you have installed an aftermarket transmission cooler AND have flushed it every year and replaced with MOBIL 1 ATF.

Private Party Blue Book for your car in excellent condition: $3,220+1,000 for wheel/tire combo+500 for stereo and gauges mods=$4,720-2,000 for the chain guides-1,000 for O2 sensors, all new hoses, etc.=$1,720

The chain guides estimate may be a little high but even T3 charges 1500 if you have to do a pan drop. It will need all new hoses as it is 13 years old and has 127k. Joe quoted Dennis about 700 bucks for all hoses a while back. O2 sensors are 200 for the pair. This isn't even taking into account transmission maintenance as it is the 2nd-most expensive repair on a Q.

Realistically, I would expect that an owner buying a high-mileage car is already expecting/prepared to do some maintenance. Since this is the case, just knock off 2 grand for the guides and you get:

$2,720

Sounds fair to me. I think the guides are a BIG issue to NICO members. I say, put the original wheels back on the car, and trade it to the dealership, then sell the 18" wheels/tires to a NICO member.

Tell me about the Stereo replacement. I am having trouble with the CD changer in my '94, and like the arrangement in my wife's I30t, with the single disc in the dash, and the changer in the trunk.

DId you ahve to modify much? Were the amps bad, or did you ahve to change them, for the swap? How hard is it to remove the leather surround, and how is it done?

I don't know that I personally would feel good about myself selling my car back to the dealership without telling them about the guides. The other side of the argument is that "they are the techs and should know everything about these cars"

I would go to the dealer and get a trade-in quote on your car. They may surprise you. My dad got 9,000 bucks for his 94 with 146k back in 2000. And this is the same dealership that I had to explain the chain guide issue to last year so they had no idea either way.

a small car lot dealer could ask $4500 for the car without much guilt. You shouldn't though.

Mentioning the guides is a tricky moral question. For 90% of cars sold at the price you mentioned neither the buyer nor the seller is aware of the issue at all. If you mention them at all be prepared to take $1500 off the asking price. Conversly if the guides were done it would add about $800 to the askable price.

I agree with Jeff, the wheels aren't going to add much to the car's value and certainly not nearly what you paid for them. You will do well to sell them outright and replace with your old wheels if you still have them. Just little ways you can get more money off of your car :)

If you decide to go the "return to stock and trade route", I'd be interested in the Bose CD head unit. Trade and cash?? You wouldn't want a hole in the dash when you got to trade.

I would very interested to see how much you could get for a trade-in on that car. Might be more than you could get private party.

On that note, one of these days for fun I'm gonna have them give me a trade-in quote on mine. 1990, 250k, what are you thinkin? 500? 1000? It's worth 50 times that to me.

Nah - Trade in would be lower (if a dealer would even take it).

Better off selling to a member at a lower price (at least we know what the true value of the car is).

Hitman,

You're probably right. I was just thinking with the guides not being done, a member will automatically request close to 2k off the asking price. While it is understandable, the dealer may not ask that off. But then as previously mentioned the morality of to tell or not to tell comes into play. All in all, I still think private party sale is your best bet.

trade in valve is like all pricing at a dealer complicated. This is years of being next door neighbors with a car salesman.

If the car saleman has you looking at a $15,000 stickered used car with they have $12,000 in, and you bring a '90Q He may offer you $2500 on it, thinking he'll unload it in next two weeks to some rinky dink lot for $1500, but he will be a lot more firm on the $15,000 price.

If you're negotiating a trade in always get the bottom price on the car you're buying firm before you even bring up a trade in car.

I don't think any Infiniti dealer would be interested in that vintage of car for his lot. So you will be dealing with Snake Oil Sam. Since the guides are unkown, and it would almost cost the incremental value to the car to deteremine to verify they have been done, you could just keep it and drive it.

I hate to say it but I agree, if you want top dollar put it in the autotrader. Someone unaware of the guides and sees the other stuff will probably give you close to what you're asking.

I agree with meytroyed... put it on Autotrader. Ask $4900, let it go for $4500. I paid $3800 for my Q with 169k (guides not done, bad fuel pump). 1-st gen Q45s with over 150k in poor to average condition go for $2900-$4000 here.
