I bought what looked to be a perfect condition 97 altima. i drove it home and three days later it started acting up. Turns out i need a new engine it's best My mechanic says to just get rid of it. He says if in a month or so the transmission goes(2kto fix) that will make the car worthless.

should i spend 1k for a new enigne and sell it. Or just drive and hope the transmission doesnt go bad.

Is there anway to determine how well a transmission will hold up with a new car engine.

welcome to NICO.i have to give it to you straight: buyer ignorance is at buyer's own peril.why the savvy car buyer looks beyond the shiny(?) paint, and evaluates maintenance records, and seeks out a nissan master tech trained in 1993 on the U13 to know what they are getting into.

even here, you can get extremely knowledgeable advice, but even in the best case, we are making an internet diagnosis that is only as good as the information that you provide.

what makes your mechanic think you need a new engine?

i personaly don't know much about cars....embaressing. But we have in my the neighbrohood a a mechanic that usouly takes car of everything for everybody and my family trusts him. He opened up the engine and told us a baring was worn out.

When ever i was in a complete stop my car would start shaking and i could just hear the engine shut down. all the lights would come and i would have to restart the enigne.

I got a new engine now the mechs told me they put it in yesterday. Do you guys think My car's transmison will work fine with a new(used) engine or what? Or after i get thecar back should i jusdt sell it.

I'd get a few opinions about the engine or atleast get your mechanic to elaborate when he says the einge and transmission must be replaced. That would a pretty drastic diagnostic to tell you both need to be replaced.
