I'm thinking about getting a Momo steering wheel for my S14 and since it has airbags, I'm wondering if the adapter will clear the clock spring. I still want to have the horn and cruise control switch so I have to keep the clock spring intact and operating.

I have done something similar to my now-sold DSM and I was able to keep the clockspring intact and operational, but I had to use an adapter that was not Momo (some generic Japanese brand). I was able to mount the cruise control switch on Sparco external horn button plate.

So, if you have seen/you know a setup in an S14 w/o losing the clockspring, I would like to talk to you. I'm trying to avoid having to get a Momo adapter and having to send it back if it doesn't work like I want it to be.

Thanks in advance

Thanks.

I think I can improvise his method. It seems that he has removed too many things. By keeping the clock spring (i.e. "the spiral part"), hooking up horn and cc controls are extremely easy. I'd modify the adaptor first before modifying any wiring harness or leaving the clock spring out.

In case it wasn't on the link, that guy that made that later realized his method was very bad bcs it ended up sometimes making the wires spiral too much and caused problems.

Anyway, when I was trying to do it on my s13, there MIGHT be a chance to keep the clock spring mechanism, but I doubt it w/o some fabricating/welding. The Momo hub has a horn one, but no cruise control (it does for a few other cars though).

I don't completely remember, but I think the problem I had was that you'd have to modify both the hub & the clock spring into 1 unit because of nut clearance issues and I don't know how to weld

Hope you figure out a way so I can get my cruise control back too .

What do you mean I took too much off? If you use an S13 hub, that spiral hub will not fit. If you use a Nismo hub, made for the S14, you can retain the spiral without any problems. The only problem is that the Nismo hub is a different bolt pattern than that of a Momo or Sparco wheel. The only two I know of that woudl work, would be Nismo or Nardi. I just swapped to a Nardi wheel and had to get a different hub.

And yes, my original idea of using a coil of wires was a complete failure. The loop would eventually get caught up around the steering column and ground out causing the horn to stay on. Using the slipring setup is virtually flawless. I've been very happy with that setup.

Dood, where were you a year ago?

Just want to say I love all your write ups, they definately helped me in a lot of my projects. THANKS!

In any case, so you found a way to keep cruise control? Has the write up w/ the slipring info been updated/added since then (if it's not already updated)?

I can't wait to get cruise control back, hehe.

Sorry bud, I'm a little lazy when it comes to checking out the forums Also, thanks for the compliments. I'm glad the write-ups helped!

Krapp....I just realized that the last post was a year ago..sorry again

I had a solution for the cruise since day 1. In fact, it was a personal requirement that I had a solution for it before I even started.

Anyway, I think it's very easy. Match the colors to the buttons you use and away you go. You can even simplify it by leaving out the cancel button. I can show you how to do that as well.

Bill Courtney's "wiring for dummies" diagram really simplifies the understand of the wiring.
