depends if you are buying her a sedan or coupe. coupe's have a little more to maintain I believe (but that's also b/c their drivers tend to push them a little harder).

one common primary concern is oil consumption, but that's mostly on the older models (03 and 04).

05 and later have a very high satisfactory rate (I have a 2005 G35x).

oil/filter changes run about $50 (depending on where you live) at the local Infiniti dealership.

Parts are going to be typical for a luxury foreign car, but slightly less than German cars.

basically, these cars were built for performance, and they handle very well. my wife looks for any excuse to drive my car. the sedan is great family car (I read somewhere that someone was able to fit 3 childseats in the back).

but it is certainly worth taking for a test drive, but I would recommend going with 2005 as the latest year model.

+1

get 2005 or better... i also have a 2005 g35x... i found mines with only 18,000 miles on it last year(2008)... so dont shoot for such high milage just yet...

in my opinion she will probably like the sedan better if she does the shopping in the house hold... same great handling and power as the coupe but more room... just more pratical...

oh and maintience has been a breeze so far... just fluid/filter changes... i been to the dealer twice so far... got new front brakes and a warranty fuel damper fix at 31,000 miles...

Yes, from everything I saw/heard when researching G35s was to get the '05+ when possible. I just happened to find a great deal on a very low mile '03 so jumped on it. Most '05s I saw were 40-55k miles, both coupes and sedans, ranging from $14k to $20k.

my question is what do you drive? you sure you going to be able to give up a G35 to your wife after you test drive one?

i was hooked after my test drive I gave it night to sleep on it... woke up still thinking about the test drive... still happy in my g35x after almost a year of ownership.

Make sure you buy an Infiniti. Infinity just makes audio equipment and stuff. The 05 G doesn't have much bad about it, as it was redesigned and improved over the first series G. Parts are relatively cheap. Maintenance is simple and its a well built car.

Most of the maintenance things can be done your self with simple tools.. Oil change, brakes, rotors, and lots of other things

Hell you can lower it and run a 350z suspension with simple tools as I did with mine

The oil consumption is only on 05-06 sedans and coupes with 6-speed manuals. I have one and have just had a new motor installed so i know that is fact. I don't think any of the 03-04's had oil issues

My 06 6 speed manual uses a qt of oil every 3.5k to 4k miles

So far, in almost 92k miles two tire pressure warning sensors and one defective drivers side air bag control module all replaced under warranty by the dealer during the first year. I've done 28 oil changes myself so far which run about $15.00 including factory filter.

I'll vote you for an 06 sedan 6 sp manual

Assuming you are running standard oil for 5 qts with filter to be $15? I'm trying to prepare myself to have to buy full synthetic on the G and another one of my cars.

Also from most Nissan places/techs the VQ has shown some oil consumption in all models (not all cars just possible in all models). But it is more likely in the '05+ 6 speed. I never had an issue during 4 years of an '02 Pathfinder and have put 2500 miles on my G35 and haven't noticed any.

Oil consumption is normal, Unless you go through 4 quarts in 10 seconds of idling. In that case, you forgot to install your drain plug or filter. My car only uses about 1/2 quart between oil changes. But I do my oil changes every 2500 miles. I have noticed about 1 quart every 4000 miles, which is normal. The rev up motor, 1 every 2000 or less is a problem. Otherwise, nothing to worry about. The 4.5 though, loves drinking oil. 1 quart every 3000 miles for the 02-05 versions is normal.
