Post

Sorry in advance for wall of text - This is sort-of a follow up of this thread: zer...oblem

I decided to go ahead and try getting a pretest and just see what my numbers were.. yeah my nox was well over 3k (everything was pretty high) and I blew white smoke almost the whole test.. then realized at the end that the test that the guy was connected to the state computer.. didn't 'realize' that I had asked for a PRE test, and now I'm labeled a damned gross polluter in CA. Anyways...

So I figure my headgasket is bad, valve guides probably screwed up in a couple cylinders, piston rings worn.. the works. Car has been abused for most of 230k miles. As I stated in the other thread, I do have a whole '95 engine with close to 80k on it. At this point I'm just gonna borrow my buddy's '67 mustang til I get that motor in my car.

The engine is mostly disassembled down to a shortblock now. Pistons are still in the block attached to the crank. Oil pan is off so I could inspect the crank, and it actually looks pretty damned good. The cylinder walls still have visible cross-hatching, and the tops of the pistons look really clean - a little bit of engine bright and a shop towel and they look new.

The head looks similar - I haven't taken the valves out (no valve compressor tool yet). The cams are out, and it looks like he alerady removed the upper chain guide. The tensioners feel stiff and the chains look fantastic. I'm planning on popping the valves out and lapping them anyway, figure I might as well since we've already pulled the head. The kid claimed he put S13 cams into this motor, though I didn't write down the numbers and check yet (at this point it doesn't really matter to me, as long as I can make this motor pass smog). The only thing I think I need aside from valve guides are the bucket caps.. I pulled a dumb-sh*t move and turned the head upside-down when the cams were out so I could look at the valves and they all fell to the floor :x - however I couldn't really find them listed as a part in any of the sites I checked (rockauto, turbo240, and a couple others I can't remember) - is there a part number I should be using for them? I'm just gonna replace all 16 and keep my fingers crossed that they'll be ok.. can't really afford new springs if I can avoid it at all.

However, all this being said, the reason I was able to buy this motor was because the kid wrecked his car driving way too fast around a turn on a mountain road - caught the front-right of the car in a guard rail. I made sure he left the motor in the car so I could get a better sense of any possible damage when I came to pick it up - all the framework and piping around the motor appeared undamaged so I went ahead with it and pulled it.

So, now I'm just looking for recommendations on how best to put this together and get my car back on the road. Money is a pretty big concern for me, though I can't afford to not actually fix it so.. I was thinking of just getting an aftermarket gasket set off rockauto.com and a set of decent headstuds - then changing the valve guides (come with the kit) and all intake/exhaust gaskets and of course the head gasket.

I'm a little bit unsure of how I need to 'accessorize' the block - I have a '93, and this is an OBDII motor setup (I'm pretty sure it's actually out of a '96) so would I need to use my '93 intake and exhaust manifolds? If so wouldn't I also need a set of gaskets for those parts (I was told the s14 gaskets for intake/exhaust manifolds were different)? Can I just re-use my s13 distributor or will I need to change up some wiring to use the s14 dizzy with the internal coil? Is there anything else I should expect doing an s14 motor in an s13? This motor also has an a/c compressor and the main lines attached to it.. I was really hoping I could get a condenser/evap canister/etc and hook it all up in my car (not having a/c in a job where I drive ALL day really sucks here in the valley during summer) - everytime I've asked about this before all I really got was "just buy an SE" lol.. I have no problem wiring up the compressor clutch etc - hell the relay electrical is already in place (i'm using the relay plug for my electric fan right now heh) so I figure all I really gotta do is rig a switch for the compressor clutch into the dash somewhere. That, and convert it to R134a.. shouldn't be too tough.

So, anything I definitely should replace that I can't really get away with at this point? I know everything is pretty subjective considering I've just 'looked' at everything, but it honestly all looks like it's in great shape. No real gunk in the head or shortblock anywhere, no metal shavings in the oil pan, the head gasket was in perfect stock shape, even the lower chain guide looked to have very very little etching in it heh. Thanks for any advice you guys have - Hopefully I can turn this into an FAQ-worthy write-up as I get this motor re-assembled and put back into my car, and hopefully smogged successfully
