ok,i just got my front clip,and so did my friend,on the side of my head,toward the fan,there are lines or fins on it,and my friends sr did not have any lines or fins,its just flat.whats the differents between the two.they are both s13 redtop motors,i know mine is out of a silvia and his is out of a 180sx.do you know?thanks,

i could be very wrong here and look like a fool, but weren't the redtop 180's all CA's?

88-90 180's had the CA, 91-98 180's had the SR.

I noticed the same thing on my friend's redtop he just installed into his black 'vert. He has fins on his engine, mine doesn't. It's a weird anomoly that I can't explain. I don't think Nissan would change the chain cover depending on what car it was going in. My guess is that maybe it's a replacement cover that someone had to put on their engine for some reason. I'm probably wrong on that hypothesis though.

I recently (just two days ago) noticed the same thing on my friends SR.He was getting his swap done and I noticed his had fins.Weird but I dont think it makes a difference.

Any time you have a finned metal surface, it is generally to help with heat dispersion. I'm curious to go look at my car now, and see what the story is. It came out of a 180SX front clip.

This is the true correct answer. Just like the old beatles and any motorcycle. The head is finned for cooling.
