Alllrite this is what happened. I had trouble starting my car a few months ago. I posted a question online and many said that it was probaly my starter. In a few days the problem disappeared. Now after a couple of months I run into the same problem. My car ocassionally will not start ('90 s13 automatic).

When it is in park and I turn on the iginition, the starter does not kick in. But the intresting fact is that I can move my gear lever by pressing on the brake (this if I remember right couldnt be done before starting the car normally).

Also my freaggin security system has stopped working. It is an autopage system and was installed professionally by the previous owner. Normally when I used to arm it or disarm it, it used to make a sound. Now that stopped working mysteriously. Also the small red light that blinks when the system is armed, stays on all the time. No blinking. When I start the car and drive it, it stops glowing, but when the car is off it automatically goes on. Also when I arm or disarm the system, the turn signals blink indicating the system is armed, but if I open a door or somethin that normally sets the alarm off, nothing really happens.

I have a strange feeling that the starting problem and the Security system are problems caused by a single source and it hurts, but I think my computer is dying. Any suggestions ?

Taking the shifter out of park with key on engine off while pressing on brake pedal is normal. When you depress the brake pedal you are disengaging the shifter interloack solenoid.

As for your no start no turn, do you hear a click when you turn the key to start? if you slide the shifter down to neutral, does she turn over then??

Did you check for signal at the starter itself?

As for your aftermarket alarm, sounds like a possible internal problem. If you havn't touched anything else wiring wise (grounds, aftermarket fuses etc...)Try disconnecting batt volts and reconnect, it might cure it, may have changed mode somehowand now requires reprogramming.

Hope this helps, pm me if you need more help.

I do not hear a click when the car fails to start. But if the car starts from park, I hear that click (that shift lock getting disengaged) when I press the brakes. If I move to neutral, the car starts normally.

When I start from park, the lights in the dash go out but nothing else happens. Like when you try to start the car from drive, I think... my car does not realize that its in park and hence refuses to start. But when I move it to neutral it senses that. Am I making any sense ???

And no I have not checked for the signal at the starter. Is there a thread somewhere ?

BTW Thanks guys, I"ll try disconnecting the battery as soon as I leave school.

cool...

sounds to me that your "neutral safety switch" is either out of adjustment or is just plain going bad.

try pushing "up" (towards radio) on your shifter when it won't start if it starts then, all you will likely need is an adjustment.

The N.S.S is located on the side of your trans, so you'll need to get underneath to check things out. there is an adjustment procedure that involves an alignment pin inserted in a hole with the shifter in park.

Don't bypass the N.S.S because then your car will be able to start in drive or reverse.....

CLRKN In regards to your alarm if the led light is constant on you hit the valet(spelling) switch. Its a small toggle switch that allows you to disable the alarm but keep remote power door locks working. Look under your dash under your steering wheel for theh toggle switch. That is where it usually is. Just push it back to the other side and try activiating your alarm.

Guys,

It happened again. The car fixed itself, this is what really pisses me off.

I tried to disconnect the battery and connect it back nothing happened. I gave up, went out for dinner and came back. IT started working. Dont know how.

As far as the starting problem goes, yeah it is the sensor, if I push the gear lever towards the dash and start it it works.

But when something mysterious happens, I'm mad.

Thanks for all the help guys.
