Can somebody explain how the security (alarm) feature is supposed to work? I seem to recall when I first got my V that once I locked it up, then came back and pulled on the door handle or something, lights would flash and the horn would sound. Now, even following the procedure in the manual there seems to be no such result. I guess I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or just expecting more than just a locked car.

I'm not 100% sure about this, so maybe someone else can chime in to help. As I understand it, the Versa doesn't actually come with an alarm unless you get it as an option. Many people assume they have an alarm just because they have a remote for keyless entry w/a panic button. That's not the same as an actual alarm that will sound if someone forces their way in.

Correct.

The alarm system + LoJack was offered to us as an option on our SL even though we have the intelligent key. According to West Covina Nissan the alarm and Lojack can be installed by the dealer later if you didn't purchase it with the car.

OK, so what explains my earlier experience with the audible alarm, and what is the significance of the blinking car/lock symbol on the instrument panel?

The blinking key symbol is (I believe) for the intelekey. Ours shows that too. I think it's showing that it "found" the intelekey fob thingy.

The audible alarm still works if you press that button on the intellikey. It's actually a panic button, not an alarm-setting key. It allows you to draw attention to your plight if someone tries to carjack you.

The SL does have a car alarm. This is the description from Nissan Canada http://www.nissan.ca/en/vehicl...theft

Anti-theft SystemStandard in the 1.8 SL model, the Anti-theft System flashes the headlights and sounds the horn your Versa if there's any attempt to open the doors or hood without a key, or remove key cylinders. You can also push the panic button on the keyfob to sound the alarm for 20 seconds.

Righto! So to circle back to my original question . . . (and I don't have the intellikey)

Hmmm...yep, the Nissan USA site says the SL comes with security also. Does anyone know if this is new for '08? Because I'm pretty sure our '07 SL does not have an alarm.

my nissan S didnt come with an alarm, but my dealer installed one, it shuts off the cars ignition when its activated, I tried it out, I sat in the car turned on the alarm and the car wouldnt start. The alarm also sounds off when the door is opened and such. The dealer said it would not ring off from little vibrations like trucks passing by.

This is not new to 2008. All of the 2007 SL should have the security alarm. Leave your window's open, get out of the car and lock the doors. Then put your hand through the open window and unlock the door.If the alarm sounds when you try to open the door, you have an alarm. If not, you have a lovely blinking light.

Yeah, I'm going to have to try that later tonight when I get home. I specifically remember the alarm system being an accessory option which we didn't purchase. And even when the dealership was trying to sell us extras, they mentioned the "Passive numbering system". When my wife said something about not really wanting that because the car already had an alarm, the sales guy said, "You don't really have an alarm. The intellikey and keyless entry are not an actual alarm". So naturally I assumed that we did not have one. I'm gonna check tonight and settle this once and for all.

Well whatdaya know...we DO have an alarm! I did the open window test like Guat suggested and we definately have an alarm. The horn blows and the lights flash. I tried it by locking the doors with the remote and then again by pressing the little black button on the door handle. It set the alarm both ways. I'm glad to see we have it, but that is really wierd because I was told by the dealership that it didn't have one.

Well, that's refreshing, considering the alarm on my SL went off 36 hours AFTER it was broken into, not DURING the break in.
