A couple of question. First I have a 2007 M35,when trying to run the diagnostic system check, the test goes halfway then stops . After this I get a control unit malfunction flag. My question is could the control unit cause me to get a service engine soon light? Also could only half of the control unit work?(only my 2 left tire pressure monitors work).Third could the control unit cause transmission faults? Any help would be appreciated..

First how many miles on the car? And as for the diagnostic check I don't know anything about that. But if the SES light is on then take it to AutoZone and have them pull the codes. Last question is your transmission shifting rough? that could be dirty fluid

Im not really sure what diagnostic check you are talking about. Sounds like you are talking about the little menu item in the secret diagnostic menu from your thread title, but that doesnt really do anything except check a few sensors and basically check just the center console unit for functionality. Or maybe you are talking about a scanner that you hook up through the ODBII port?

Either way, TPMS sensors are their own thing and they do go out. Each sensor communicates independently with the computer system of the car and I doubt two of the receivers simply went out. Most likely the sensors need replacing.

If your center console crashes during the little self test then something is probably wrong with it. I do not think the service engine soon light will come on for a center console problem though, that light I *think* is controlled by the ECU which is in charge of the engine and the sensors that make the car actually move and all that. I can reset the console computer system even while driving and it does not cause any dash lights to come on or the car to flip out.

Did you know that there is a 2nd level to that secret diagnostic menu? If you do the same procedure once more that you use to get into the menu while you are already inside then some additional options will open up.

My car is doing the same thing when I run a self diagnosis, it says it can not complete the diagnosis because of a control unit malfunction. I originally ran the test because my navigation won't pick up my current location no matter what. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know the specific answers about the secret diagnostic mode, but I give you feedback on a couple of your questions:

TPMS sensor have a non-replaceable battery. They eventually die and you need to replace the sensors. I have a 2007 and my first one died earlier this year.

On the navigation question - I ran into the same thing until I realized you have to choose a specific region. Once I picked my region, everything appeared, including my home street.

I hope that helps.
