Sorry if this has been discussed. I did a forum search for "secondary" and only 3 posts showed up.
I have a 2007 Quest that has a high pitched buzzing sound that is tied to engine RPM. My searching has led me to believe that this is a problem with a worn tensioner on a secondary timing chain.
The dealer I called claims to be unfamiliar with this problem in the Quest, but quoted me $2500 to replace the timing chain. An independent mechanic that I talked to is very familiar with the problem and says $2000.
I don't mind doing my own work, usually, but I hate working on this van. It's just packed in too tight and there's no room to work. It might be better if I had an extra joint between my elbows and my wrists, but alas, I've just got the normal number of bendy places in my arms.
How much of the cost that I'm being quoted is parts vs. labor? Do I have any alternatives? Has Nissan stepped up and provided any relief for this problem?
Thanks,
Matt
