Unfortunately, time and time again, it has been proven that with out a law, noone seems to do the smart thing on their own. Stupid people deserve stupid tickets. And unfortunately, it only takes one stupid accident to show you how stupid you are. But by that time, it may be too late.

By the way, I am a claims adjuster. I've handled many accident claims where it was amazing to learn that a person just walked away from the accident. I've never handled an accident from someone getting seriously hurt or killed from a seatbelt. That's 5+ years of claims with thousands of claims a year. Do the math. Buckle up.

John's right - You DO have to worry about "clickin it". The shoulder belt is pretty much useless w/o the lap belt, unless you want some really gruesome injuries...

the shoulder belt REMINDS you to put on the lap belt

My dad has been a EMT(cardaiac tech) for as long time, and he is the person I believe when he says seat belts save lives and work. He has been to accidents where simply putting your seat belt on would have saved lives. They are just looking out for your safety, sure someone will be like seat belts can kill ya, true, I have heard stories of decapatation, buts it is EXTREMEMLY rare. I wear my seat belt everywhere, I like the feeling of being restrained in a fast moving automobile.

when i had my civic it was automatic to put on my seat belt. now in the 240 i have automatic seatbelts and if i do unhook it, it doesn't roll up all the way and pokes me in the hip. Nick

C-Kwik, my thoughts exactly. As a society, we would be a mess w/o rules. And to say that the government is making a rule that effects nobody but yourself is untrue. Not wearing a seatbelt (as has been demonstrated) effects everyone on the road with you. THAT is why there is a law about it. And if nothing else, not wearing a seatbelt means that it will cost insurance companies more money to pay for your accident, wich increases EVERYONES rates, and since I'm paying over $100 a month for liability only, I'd like to keep rates as low as possible.

I didn't see this answered. they've always been able to ticket you for not wearing your seatbelt, but they had to have another reason to pull you over. now they can just see you not wearing a seatbelt and pull you over just for that.

I'm with most of the people on this one, I feel uncomfortable without a seat belt. I even feel uncomfortable driving with a person who doesn't wear their seatbelt. I don't know about this whole personal freedom thing. I guess I feel that it's kinda stupid actually that they have to make a law to make people do something they should be doing anyway.

Nathan wrote:Here's another case for how not wearing a seatbelt could hurt others: Say you are driving down the highway and you get rearended by someone going 40mph faster than you (It IS possible)...you drive a S13 so you dont have airbags, if your not wearing a seatbelt your head smashes into the steering wheel and knocks you out. Since you are knocked out you loose complete control over your vehicle and instead of immediately slowing down, you careen into a suburban and kill 8 kids on the way to soccer practice. If you had been wearing your seatbelt you would have remained concious and able to avoid further collisions. Now is this scenario far fetched? YES...but it is also entirely possible.

Ok same situation only this tim your wearing you seatbelt, your not knocked out but your car is still swerving out of control, due to the intensity of the situation you make the wrong corrective manuver and instead of planting yourself in the ditch you fishtail in to the same suburban with the eight kids in it. This to is a far fetched scenario but it to could happen.

nismokid wrote:i dont think 98TURBOKA is saying that wearing a seatbelt can be a bad thing. the point he is getting at is the laws being too invasive on your personal preference. Now it's just the preference of wether or not to wear your seatbelt in your own car while you are driving but maybe someday these laws getting too invasive into your personal life and little by little we are going to live in a society where laws govern every little thing you do by telling you how to do them. (i.e. Big Brother from the book 1984). is that the point you're trying to make 98TURBOKA??????

Thank you!!! Someone that finaly understands what I was tying to say when I started this post. Everyone that has responded has had some great points, But I still feel that it is a personal option, that you can make for yourself. Again I do understand that seatbelts can save lives, And in no way am I trying to tell people not to wear them.
