me and a friend just rebuilt my motor, ka24de. We were putting the upper timing chain on and noticed that there was only one gold link on it... so we lined it up on the sprocket... we sat the cams where the dots were in the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions... the lobes were facing outwards... do the have to be PERFECTLY facing outwards? I am going today to try and set the timing and I just needed to know... 10 o clock and 2 o clock , is that right? and do the lobes in the front have to be facing outward perfectly flat?

If I remember correctly there is a pic floating around some where showing the propper way they should be. Just be sure to turn it over several times by hand to make sure your not going to hit a valve. If I remember correctly they are not perfectly pointed out ward.

well I went and got it right. Ok. I'm going to do a search... my computer isn't throwing any codes at all but it sounds wierd when I start it up... It has compression cause I can hear the "poot poot poot poot" out the tailpipe. I am getting fuel and i'm not sure if I am getting spark, I dont have anyone to watch for me. The starter sounds really loud.. kina like it's spinning fast... well... I'm thinkin i coulda put the distributor in wrong or I need to rotate it. eh... any ideas?

Yeah sounds like it could be a Ignition problem. I would start by restabbing the distirbutor, could be out a tooth or two. Rotate it and see if it gets and better. When you have the motor on TDC Idelaly the rotor should be pointing at the #1 spot on the cap.

thanks. Well I was over there messing with it and put it in and took it out4 or 5 different times...I took my oil cap off and rotated the crank pulley to the 2nd dot on the left... saw the cam lobe sticking out so I knew it was on the compression stroke... lined up the big dot on the distributor and pushed it in... thing doesn't go in easy so i had to turn it a hair... that might be what i am messing up. Plus I need a pic of a distributor from a 94 KAde.. the pics of the dizzys on here dont look like mine. the fsm is not a bunch of help in this area. btw.. here's what my engine sounds like when it starts...Click here to watch '11-15-05_1509'

yea i know..i took a video with my cell phone... it sounds like the starter is turning but it's not cranking... it is hard to describe. There was one time I started it and it turned over for a second and then went back to the spinning sound. The motor is turning too.

spinning motor sound is either wrong cam timing or bent valves. i'd get a compression testor on it if i at all thought that might be the case. you mihg teven get a few pops if you crank the piss outta it...

so, just make sure the dist's rotor is where the point is on the cap for number one when you are at the first mark on the crank, and you should get some fire

as for cams, the sticky is at the top of the page, and they point almost entirely away ffrom each other, but they also point slightly upwards. you can only be off by a few teeth before you'll bend alotta valves

what else do you know?
