Now it is official, cracked head............

I have checked at the Car-Parts.com site for both a head and a complete engine.

From my service manual I see that the ideal compression for this motor was between 151-179psi with a maximum variance between cylinders of 14psi.

The car parts website has heads going from $175-$350, which is very reasonable in comparison to what the mechanic was guesstimating, he's a Volvo guy, so I don't think I'll have him do the work in any event.

The car-parts.com also has complete engines from $400 up to I'd suppose a grand or more , anyway some list properties such as OD, ST, RWD, FI.....so I'm assuming that there are parameters within which certain engines for certain models are interchangeable. So to my Questions, and I appreciate the opportunity to pick your so comprehensively informed brains!

1. Is there a resource online where I can enter my vin# and get the true specifics of my engine?

2. Are AT and ST not interchangeable assuming I retain the AT I now have?

3. Will a ST and accompanying transmission go into my car w/o complicated modifications?

4. What are the tests I should ask be performed to check the conidtion of a used cylinder head(not rebuilt, but from a wrecker)

5. What are the test I should expect to have been performed to check the condition of an engine from a wrecker? And what are the optimum and indicative of a "pass on that one" results of those tests?

I guess that's all. It is a wonder that you guys are here, thanks~

wow ok hm I'll try to start you off anyways:

1. not that I know of, but basically the breakdown is:S13 (89-90): KA24ES13 + S14 (91-97): KA24DEAll engines in the 240 are RWD obviously, the ST I think is for standard transmission, the FI for fuel injected (which all KA's are). I dont know what the OD is- maybe overdrive for the automatic transmission, I donno. Basically all you need to know is the engine designation for your year and what transmission you have and it'll match.

2. The motor will bolt to either transmission, the problem is the ECU which is designed to work with either 5 spd or auto. Gotta make sure those match. (you can probably keep your old ECU and be fine)

3. Switching over to manual if you already have automatic is a bit of a job. Search around the boards though, its a fairly common procedure so you'll probably find good info on it. I know for sure there is a DIY on the 240sx.org site.

4. Not so sure about testing heads... If you're gonna buy the whole thing together I would suggest an obvious leakdown test as well as compression. Make sure its not leaking oil anywhere, and, uhm.. try to get a startup warranty I guess. I really cant tell ya too much about buying engines from the junkyard- never done it... but those are the basics.

5. See above

Hope that helps a little bit!
