I've had issues with belts the last year with my '93 HB. Last summer, I had some intermittent squealing. I knew it was a loose belt, but didn't do anything about it. I was towing a trailer after buying a brand new JD mower and almost made it home and a check engine light came on. Looked down, and the temp was just about pegged. Noticed the squealing had stopped. Guess the water pump belt broke.
Pulled over to work on it in a parking lot next to a Pep Boys. Pulled the power steering pump belt off to put a new one on, and the bolt in the idler pulley got stuck and sheared off. Noticed the pulley was a little rough, but what isn't on a 200k+ mile truck? New bolt, new belts, truck got home fine.
Since then there's been a bearing noise that I assumed was that idler. A few weeks ago on the way to work, stopped for gas and the engine was struggling when I started it back up again. Little rev, was okay. About to pull out on to the street and I smell something funny. Knew it finally went. Backed up into the parking lot and checked. Sure thing, the bearing had been eaten up. Pulled it off and the remnants of that belt, and just drove to work without power steering (which is a pain with 33x12.50 MTs).
New pulley, new belt, back to the old normal of mostly okay. I should really take a little better care of the old girl. I'll keep her forever, though.
