so my a/c is at 33500 miles and ive been getting a really bad screeching noise while im driving. i took it in to the dealership and they told me it was the brakes cuz they were thin but my dad told me the brakes should last longer than that. also i dont only hear the noise when i brake. most of the time its just when im cruising around. i was wondering if anyone knows of anything like this or has a solution? if it is the brakes are they hard to change b/c i want to do them my self if it is b/c they told me it would be 260 to change them.

My brakes would squeal after 12k miles on my '09 Altima. Apparently that's a common occurrence with these cars.

If your brakes are squeeking without even applying them, then do what the dealership said and change them already. Just because they're supposed to last 40k miles doesn't mean they will if they are already that bad.

It's not simply changing the pads/etc. I think you have to make sure they are set evenly on all wheels so your car doesn't apply brakes too hard on one wheel and not the other (which can be troubling under harsh braking). I'm sure others will chime in with more advice on that aspect.

$260 is not too bad, but shop around other places, if it's just the pads then you should be able to get that done for $100-200 for all 4 wheels if I remember.

Exactly.

Take off wheels.Look in the caliper window.Measure pad thickness. In spec? Yes = Do nothing; No = replace.Measure rotor thickness. In spec? Yes = Do nothing; No = replace.

You want your pads to wear in evenly with the surface of the rotor. So if you change your pads, its a good idea to get your rotors resurfaced at the same time.

i've had a similar problem. i'm at around 19,500 miles on my 09 a/c... but mine only seem to screech when its really cold like below 50 degrees and i've only been driving for like 15-30 minutes. or when its really hot, like over 100 degrees... my brother checked my brakes when i rotated my tires like 2-3 months ago and he said they were fine. after a while of driving though it seems to stop.

(side note, doesn't screech when i'm just driving, but when i apply the brakes)

You guys should get that looked at by the dealership, sounds like the same exact problem my coupe has. I thought the warranty on the brakes was only good till 20k miles, so I don't know if you'd be covered, but still worth getting it checked out.

I have my car FINALLY at the stealership today at 19,699 miles, to get the brakes taken care of.

Hopefully.

That's normal. The brake rotor surface is bare metal so whenever you let it sit for a little while surface rust begins to form. The screeching is your pads bound to the rotor a little and/or the rust being scraped off.

Similar things happen in cold weather... the calipers or the pads stick so you get screeching while the brakes are still cold.

Well when I meant cold, I meant nearer to freezing because then you are dealing with a large delta from ambient temp to operating temp so there's plenty of contact and metal expansion/contraction.

I doubt that's happening in CA. Either you've got an issue with dew forming on your brakes in the morning or you might actually have a problem with them.

my brakes are screeching like a banshee all the time now, at first it was just when i started driving but now it's all day even if i've been driving for an hour. and it's not that cold out around here, we're getting a pretty mild winter in vancouver this year. the dealership told me that i still have a decent amount of pad left that they dont need to be replaced yet. they blamed the weather for my brakes screeching
