Was looking at getting a screamer pipe of my car and one of my friends told me it may cause a engine bay fire or might make the car run like ****... anyone got any info or feedback on this?

I have run one, no issues. I suppose it is possible. Check what it is aimed at and apply heat shielding if you are worried.

I've been running one for over a year on my DD and I really don't mind it. I usually don't open it up, just feather the throttle when it gets close. It's very handy for scaring old women too...

Fun as hell. Drive by a big church when its getting out and let that thing dump from 7k. Literally, you would end up in hell for doing it, but it would be really fun.

Stupid question, but what exactly is a screamer pipe?

Goes from the wastegate to the open air, in as little time as possible. Some are even tuned to create different sounds. This is one for the t28:

Mine looks a little different, but same idea... Its basically an external wastegate for guys running a T2 flanged turbo, that's usually internal. Might add a couple ponies since its not running into the exhaust. Other than that its for the sexy sound. $100 shipped I got mine for.

Make sure your running an sr20 downpipe if you get one though, because i don't think ca18 screamer pipes exist, you gotta get one for an sr20.

Freakin love 'em. There's nothing like cracking the wastegate wide open even if you're just getting up to highway speed.

I always raced people on the right so I could give them the full enjoyment. Wind up the motor just enough to keep up with their broken ****, get inches away from their car right next to the window and drop the hammer. Had a few guys freak out and almost crash, friggen chumps. I loved the way they would lean towards the center and try to get away from the ear-splitting noise. RHD puts you right there Having driven with the cheesegate and a true external wastegate the real deal is only slightly louder that a screamer on an actuated turbo.

I had one on my DSM and I liked it at first. But then I noticed it drew way too much attention. Not to mention it takes away from that sweet turbo sound.

These "screamer" pipes originally extended to bleed off gases for true external wastegates, they are not an external wastegate as such...

It is only in the last 12-18 months that the downpipe/screamer pipe combo for the smaller internally gated turbo's have been around...

The combo downpipe pictured won't cause running issues as such...

IMHO they perform a noise function, rather than anything else on a smaller internally gated turbo...

Boost response is much better compared to a factory outlet. Most people get them for the noise though.

oh, ok... sounds like what i have going on now... except mine is just the dump pipe with about 2" of pipe left past the flange where it was cut out of whatever car my engine came from

suprisingly enough, the 95 civic ex i used to have with the cat cut off (and nothing in it's place... stupid previous owners) was so much louder it isn't funny... the CA just sounds a bit more aggressive!
