Hello friends,

My 03 G35 has 63 K miles. I had changed all the belts at 58K miles at the local infiniti service center. A couple of weeks ago i got the same screaching noise and i went to the infiniti service centre to get it checked... they said that the belt was ok but the noise was coming from compressor clutch or something. I quiet did not understand that. They did something as a temporary fix and did not charge me a dime. I'm beginning to hear a faint screaching noise every now and then.

Any comments or suggestions? Any idea how much it might cost?

Thanks in advance

If it is related to the belts, probably a pulley is bad. Or if they traced it to the compressor clutch, uh oh. Thats half a grand right there. But if its just a pulley, 80 to 100.

Is the problem with the compressor clutch normal considering the fact that the car has just a little over 60K? Is compressor clutch supposed to be replaced under one of the factory scheduled maintenance (30 K, 60K)? Just wondering if this is normal or if i am unlucky.

Thanks

Or could they have installed the belts too tight?

Or too loose? I had to get my belts tightened post install as they started to squeal after they worked in a bit.

It's normal to get your belts tightened after you've driven for a few thousand miles.

It could be possible because infiniti(nissan) updated the part just 8 months into production, and you have a 2003. too loose would cause screeching. too tight would tear up the bearings and cause a grimey screeching. Either way, It can't be good. Its hard to say what it is since its not something i could physically observe. But know you may have to dig into your pockets, 60k is a bit early for this, but just know that out of 10000 G's, you're probably not the first. Those of you with second gen g35 and g37 are lucky. just one belt and an auto tensioner.

Ok...so here's the situation.

The screaching sound comes off and on...some mornings i start the car (a/c turned off) and there is a screaching noise. Other days it runs perfect.

My problem is that even if i were to take it to an infiniti service center, if the screaching noise is not heard when they are checking i'd lose $90 for nothing.

I want to get this probelm fixed but i am not sure how or what to do. I have been told that it is definitely not the belts or pulley...its got something to do with comp clutch...if there is a probelm why is this happening only once in a while? Any thoughts???

Thanks as always

My guess is that the new belts just stretched slightly with the A/C turned off.

Probably dependent on early morning temp and humidity?

Check the belt tension/play when cold & tighten if necessary.

I know this thread was started last year but here is the situation.

The noise faded away the way it appeared in the first place. About 2 weeks ago, I started getting the noise again almost on a daily basis and it was pretty bad.

The noise was soo bad that i took it to the local infiniti service center on friday noon. Unfortunately they could not have a look at it as they were busy and asked me to take an appointment.

I had an appointment for 7:30 am this morning and guess what...this morning there was no noise....so i looked like a jack a**...the technician tried everything but the car sounded perfect. However i did notice that the temperature in Montreal was pretty harsh over the last few days and starting sunday its been around 33-34 deg F. I guess i'm getting the noise when the temp are between 0-30 deg F. This is the first Canadian winter my G is facing.

The technician says that belts are perfect and there is nothing wrong with the compressor clutch. He asked me to get it in without an appointment when i hear the noise again.

Couple of things that were told to me.

1. Even though i replaced all my belts at an infiniti dealership at 55 k miles...i would not get a free replacement if i have to change the belts. My car has 75 k miles now. I am told that the warranty is only for 10k KMS or 12 months whatever comes first.

2. Since i purchased my car in the US, I will never be able to get a courtesy car from Infiniti dealerships when my car is in for a major service or repair.

What are your thoughts on the above 2?

If you replaced anything major and have 20 k miles on them and have to replace again, would you pay the labor + parts again?

Thanks,

Could it be happening when you DEFROST is on?

Some models in 2003 have a very noisy AC compressor. it has been described as a "weed whacker" sound when you're driving some say.

If that is your issue, the sound could be normal. The fix for that was a different bracket in a $700 replacement kit for the AC compressor.

As for the belts, they should be fine. Don't worry about them. Sometimes then contract and expand and it is common for people to get squealing with belts in cold weather until the car is warm.

I wouldn't worry about the Dealer Loaner vehicles. Thats because I can't justify the dealership repair costs when you are outside your warranty.

I've had the noise with DEFROST on and also with off (this was throughout last week). This morning i turned on the heater and the defrost and whether it was on or off...there was no noise..i would not be surprised if i get the noise again when the temp falls below zero.

My concern is not the noise.. i'd like to replace and fix stuff before it hurts or results in a major mechanical issue.

The Infiniti in seattle told me its the compressor clutch...the infiniti in Montreal says that it may be the pulley...not sure...but definitely not the belts or the compressor clutch...

I just want to know whats wrong...and whether it needs immediate attention or not.

I am aware of the fact that a lot of the forum members work on their cars and their G's seldom visit the dealerships.

For the ones who do not work on their G's....how many of us use a local mechanic or the neighborhood garage to fix your cars instead of the infiniti dealership? (for major servicing...replacing major parts if required)

Thank you for your feedback tollboothwilley.

there is no infinity dealer where i live... so i will take it to the nissian dealer if something major needs to be done... but i have been lucky to find a local mechanic that has worked on many infinities and i have let him do work on my car many times. now i dont even worry about going to atlanta... i just let him do the part replacements... but i buy all the geniue parts.. i wont let him put no generic parts on my car... just pay him for the labor
