Door moldings will offer protection, provided they're adequate in size. They need to stick out a fair bit.
On the truck I had before my Rogue, it had moldings in the shape of a rounded triangle, and they stuck out a full inch at least. One time I was meeting a friend in the parking lot and she carelessly slammed her door into the side of my truck. Fortunately, it only hit on the molding, and did no damage to the molding, door panel, or her car. (well, her friend's car)
One way to test if the size is adequate is to get the dimensions for the molding you intend to put on. Mainly, how far it sticks out. You can then take a yard stick and hold it vertical, X distance away from your door. (X being the distance the molding will stick out) If you're able to hold the entire yard stick perfectly vertical X distance away from the surface of the door, with the molding being as near the middle of the door as possible, and NOT have the yard stick contact any other part of your door, then that proves that installing the molding would decrease the chance of someone's door opening into you doing damage, significantly. However, make sure it's not super close. Because the molding will flex when it absorbs the impact of the other car door. Make sense?
But yeah, I know how that goes...coming out to your car after a day of work and finding a nice dent in it from some careless idiot who parked next to you...
Only other word of advice...park as far away as you can. I know you already said you do, but our definitions may differ. I mean at the very END of the parking lot if you have to. Always park in an 'end-space' if possible too; and park as close as you can get the vehicle to the curb. And if there's no curb, park over the lines a bit. Do whatever you can to get away from the general population.
I do all of the above, and I've only had two incidents with people scratching/dinging my Rogue. And people here treat cars as being disposable. Whether they're their own, or not.
