Scratched up shift knob.

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

The shift knob in my car is really scratched up on the metal part. I don't want to buy a whole new knob because $200.00 bucks isn't worth it to me. But has anyone had the same problem and come up with a good fix?

Dude! Pick one forum. I've deleted your duplicate threads.

Dude! They use the same shift knob on three different models. People who have the same shift knob on their G or FX probably aren't looking in the EX forum. Makes sense to ask the people on those forums too.

PS...Your rude remark would have probably been best for a private message.

I was very careful not to scratch that at first, but after one scratch, f...it!

So i leave it and keep the scratches going until you don't recognized the scratches anymore.

Haha...I have kinda of thought of that...maybe just getting some sand paper and scratching it til it is even.

But I am guessing that the first owner of the car was a woman (or man) who wore rings...There are the scratches on the shift knob and scratches around the steering wheel controls. The shift knob scratches get on my nerves because it is one of the first things passengers notice when they get in the car. Luckily there are none in the door cups or anywhere else that rings and long fingernails might reach.

Not worth spending too much on that part. I do not even wear a ring in my right finger and still get scratches. Just tell your passengers those aren't scratches, but ancient Samurai engravings! =)

I like the way you think AWGD8...I could even say that it is some Tiffany & Co. design that was part of a deluxe package and that my entire car came in that Tiffany blue box. Haha.

How much did your M knob cost XIS? Happen to know if they make a brown leather one?

it was about $100.00 and I got it on ebay. there are also perforated leather ones. I think there was brown too?? Needs a very minor/slight mod to hold the knob clips but it was so worth it.
Then I sold my OEM one on ebay for like $40 or something. The Leather one is one of my favorite little upgrades. Nice to hold and caress whilst I drive. :naughty:

I'm not liking the scratch on my shift knob. Wasn't there yesterday....and I do wear rings on my right hand.

But do love the chestnut brown interior. :bigthumb:

There's aluminum underneath that scratched coating. I masked off the leather and removed the coating with my Dremel tool to give it a brushed metal finish. No more scratches.

That's a good idea. It also seems to have a sealant coating. Would you please be able to post some photos of your Dremel brushed shift knob?

Thanks.

I already bit the bullet and bought a new knob. But I would love to see what it looks like after the dremel.

Sure. Here's a pic of what it looks like now. There are a couple more pics here https://goo.gl/photos/5t7iaM9x3eo1eB4G8. I went ahead and refreshed it since it has been about four years since I originally did this. The first pic at that link is what it looked like after a few years of use.

It's a really easy job. Just make sure you've masked off the leather well with a couple of layers of tape so you don't scratch up the leather.

That looks great! I wish I had thought of that. Would have saved me a couple hundred bucks. Haha

It looks better than stock, but you can't beat the Leather M knob for looks or feel.
