Anyone see that Infiniti/Nissan has developed a paint that can 'heal' itself when it is scratched? That is freaking awesome too bad they didn't use it on the 07 G35 my hood and bumper is pitted from rocks already at 21k miles.

"Another first is Infiniti's Scratch Shield paint, designed with a special clearcoat designed to "heal" itself should it become damaged. "

Sounds pretty strange...But, they definitely were conservative with the hardener in the batch of paint used on my car!

Sorry for the repost man, the first I heard about it was reading Motortrend review of the upcoming EX35.

There is no mention that the GT-R will get it but I bet it does get it at least in the 2009-2010 model year. I think I'm going to keep my G35 for 3 more years then try to find a 2008 GT-R in 2010/11 with less then 50,000 miles.

ah no worries man. We have los of new member and I am pretty sure most of us did not see tha before. I don't think the GT-R wll get it right now but you never know. I was thinking about to get the GT-R too. But for a new i don't think I would pay that much and I would be worry to buy a used car. Maybe somebody like you and me was killing it previously.

no doubt! I'd buy a used one from an Infiniti or Nissan dealership and then add a 100,000 mile warranty!

I just saw the motorweek review of the EX35...looks like a nice crossover! They also mentioned the self-healing paint.

something else in the article....

"Playing off the EX35's dynamic control system, LDP uses a small camera mounted in the windshield to detect lane drift. Not only are visual and audio warnings issued should drift be detected, but the vehicle uses the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system to actuate the brakes individually to help guide the EX35 back into its lane."

......holy crap, I hope that system doesn't mess up, the AI will run your butt off the freakin road

Self-healing paint sounds like a good idea. If it really works, it would be a better solution to the rock chip problem than a bra (clear or clip-on).

Lane Departure Warning is part of the tech package on the FX. It is purely a passive system in that it issues a warning but doesn't try to steer the vehicle. An active version (it does steer) will be an option on the EX.

Nanny crap like Lane Departure and Intelligent Cruise Control is currently optional. There will be more of it in the future. Eventually, it will become standard equipment on everything. I wonder how soon G-level performance will become irrelevant because the computer won't let you use it. Already, you cannot disable ABS (even if you turn off VDC) and the G has a "black box" to record information like speed which can be downloaded by police and lawyers. (An electrical engineering geek could get rich off a gadget to clear this data.)

Before buying my G37, I thought briefly about a mid-sixties Jaguar XKE. The G37 won out because it combined practicality with performance. However, if overbearing "safety" systems turn everything into a Prius, I would go with the Jag.
