I've had light scratches on my clear coat forever now and decided to fix it today. I washed the car with dish soap, clay barred the hood, used rubbing compound on the hood, then polishing compound on the hood and then finally waxed it. Now it looks a whole lot better but there are still visible scratch marks and it isn't as shiny as other areas. Did I do something wrong? Should I try Swirl-X or something? Any help would be appreciated. (I put this in Gen Chat cus the detailing forum never gets any traffic)

When every you compound a clear coat painted panel its always good to have a paint thickness meter.

Here are the pics, I sort of had trouble catching what I'm actually seeing.
This is what the scratches first looked like. Really visible, (this is the part of the car I haven't worked on yet)

Now here is the hood I worked on. There is definitely an improvement but you can still see rough spots where it isn't shiny and scratches are still visible.

Here is the products I am using.

I cleaned the entire car with dish soap, then used the rubbing compound and then the polishing compound and followed up with the wax. There is definitely an improvement but I expected the scratches to sort of vanish. It's starting to get really frustrating because the problem isn't being fixed, just "improved".

My car got egged last year and it sat in the sun for 6 hours. I couldn't get it off with hot water so it resulted in the use of a rough clear coating scratching alternative.

Well I hope the people who egged your car die a painful death.

As for the damage I would measure how much paint is left. If little is left then there isn't much your can do. If they are scratches you can try a filler product called Autoglym Super Resin Polish. That fills it in and removes the least clears as possible.

If that fails see a pro detailer.

AFAIK eggs chemically react with the clear coat on a hot day so badly that it has to be sanded off completely and re-done.

Did you actually use a buffer to do the buffing, or did you just apply the stuff by hand? I've always had better luck with the 3M buffing compounds.
