Metal on metal sound is probably not the e-brake. If the e-brake was engaged, your wheels would be smoking.
Is it a creaking noise, like an old door perhaps? Is it a continuous sound, or does it only occur when you're on a bumpy road?
There's probably some piece of garbage that is stuck in there, or a part that has broken and is touching another moving part.
I would suggest asking a passenger to sit in the back and try to identify which side the sound is coming from. That will help you narrow it down.
Firestone was probably unable to find anything wrong, because when the car is on a lift, the wheels sit much lower. If the part that's causing the noise is coming from the top, it might not make contact when they spin the wheel.
Once the side is identified, they should be able to find the cause easily. If not, I would go elsewhere.
